thumbnail Hello,

The two teams join Vietnam, Brunei, Laos and Philippines in Group A, with Myanmar, Thailand, Indonesia, Timor Leste and Cambodia in Group B

Singapore has been grouped with defending champions Malaysia for the year-end SEA Games, after the draw was conducted earlier today.

Both teams are in Group A along with Vietnam, Brunei, Laos. Philippines have also been included in Group A despite them indicating that they will not be sending a men's team. Group B is made up of hosts Myanmar, Thailand, Indonesia, Timor Leste and Cambodia.

Malaysia coach Ong Kim Swee believes the group is "balanced".

"Balanced group, but can't deny that Singapore and Vietnam are our main challengers; besides, not taking Brunei, Laos and Phillipines lightly," he posted in a tweet shortly after the draw.

The Thais have won the gold medal four times in a row after it became an Under-23 event in 2001, with Malaysia winning the last two, including the previous edition in Jakarta in 2011. Singapore has never won a gold medal at the SEA Games with the closest being a runners-up finish in 1983, when they also hosted the event, 1985, when it was held in Thailand, and in 1989, at the Kuala Lumpur games.

The football competition will run from December 1 to 21.

In the other football events, Myanmar, Indonesia and Malaysia are in Group A for men's futsal, with Thailand, Vietnam and Laos in Group B. Brunei withdrew from the futsal event as well. In women's football, Group A will comprise Myanmar, Philippines, Indonesia and Vietnam, while Group B is made up of Thailand, Laos, Malaysia and Timor Leste.
