The goalkeeper made several outstanding saves but his defence let him down as the Brazilian midfielder struck the only goal in a 1-0 home win
After 102 minutes of football, Brunei DPMM emerged from their enticing encounter with Hougang United at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium with a 1-0 win on Saturday night.
Rodrigo Tosi's header in the fourth minute of added time at the end of the first half was the difference between the two sides in an exciting end-to-end match, despite an outstanding performance from Cheetahs shot-stopper Fadhil Salim.
In-form striker Mamadou Diallo passed up two early chances, scuffing a volley wide off the back of Subhi Abdilah's misdirected header before flashing another vicious effort across the face of goal.
The 17th minute marked the start of the Fadhil show when Hougang's short corner was anticipated well by DPMM, sparking a counter-attack led by Hendra Azam. The midfielder's first time cross-field pass landed right at the feet of Azwan Ali Rahman, who burnt his marker for pace, but Fadhil got down well to turn the ball around the post.
The ensuing corner would prove costly, as Fadhil was injured whilst attempting to get the ball clear. The goalkeeper required seven minutes of on-field treatment, referee Abdul Malik Bashir subsequently signaling for the same amount of additional time at the end of the first period.
In the build up to match-winning goal, Igor Cerina's header was kept out by Wardun Yussof, with Diallo's follow-up ending up on the wrong side of the post. Meanwhile, Fadhil made a point-blank save from Shahrazen Said on the turn.
The Cheetahs goalkeeper also remarkably kept out Azwan Ali's improvised back-heel, much to the relief of his disorientated defenders.
It was his backline who let him down again deep into stoppage time. Tosi escaped his marker and guided Azwan Salleh's in-swinging near-post corner past the seemingly unbeatable Fadhil.
He was called into action again after the break, somehow keeping out Azwan Ali's volley after skipper Lau Meng Meng failed to clear a long ball into the box, this time with his shin.
Faizal Amir made a crucial goal-line clearance after Wasps captain Rosmin Kamis worked his way into the box and slid the ball past Fadhil, only to be denied by the alert defender.
Up the other end, an interesting battle was playing out between Cerina and Wardun. The former appeared to have got one over his stubborn foe when his looping header had beaten Wardun, but Subhi was on the line to lend his teammate a helping hand with a crucial clearing header.
The Croatian was rubbing his head in frustration when Wardun blocked another one of his headers, before Fadhil produced another trademark wonder save.
Tosi split the Hougang defence with a superb pass to release Adi, who opened his body as if to curl the ball around Fadhil. But the goalkeeper was one step ahead of his younger counter part and his anticipation led to a crucial save with his left hand.
Syaqir Sulaiman almost turned a Shahrazen cross past his own goalkeeper, which was followed by a finger-tip save from Fadhil to keep out a stinging Hendra half-volley.
After another five minutes of added time, Abdul brought the game to an end but a visibly irritated Wardun had to be held back from striking out at the referee and escorted straight to the dressing room by his teammates.
A feisty conclusion to a feisty encounter left DPMM with three wins in their last three games and completely in control of the bottom half of the table as the season winds towards an exciting end next month.
