The LionsXII coach admitted his team wasted chances to win by a bigger margin but is happy that they prevented ATM FA from scoring in their Malaysia Cup quarter-final first-leg win

After watching his team clinch a narrow 1-0 victory over ATM FA on Saturday night in the Malaysia Cup, LionsXII coach V. Sundramoorthy claims that they will not sit back in the return leg.

Madhu Mohana's first-half header won the game, but the Malaysian Super League champions spurned several chances and arguably should have triumphed by a bigger margin in the first leg of their quarter-final tie.

"It’ll be tough [in the away leg] but I think we need to go out there with a plan," Sundram said at the post-match press conference.

"At least it’s 1-0 rather than we are down 1-0 or 1-1. l I’d loved to have got a two-goal cushion and we created the chances, but we couldn’t finish them off. Let’s move to the next chapter in Selayang [Stadium] and see what we can do.

"If we score one, then they have to score three so it’s good that we didn’t concede. That’s the most important thing, so if we can push up and score one goal, then why not?"

Sundram then went on to praise Madhu for scoring a "great goal" and also refused to criticise striker Shahfiq Ghani, who fluffed a few good chances to extend the lead.

"Shahfiq, like what I’ve said [before], is a talented player who has good free-kick and corner kick deliveries; he had a couple of good chances and on his day, he would have scored," he asserted.

The former Singapore international remained coy on whether Shahfiq would retain his place in the away game along with skipper Shahril Ishak, who lasted the entire match despite still recovering from an injury.

The LionsXII will travel up to Selangor to face ATM again next Friday, October 4 as they continue their quest for a Double.
