Copa Del Rey champions Atletico Madrid ended their whirlwind tour of Singapore with a 2-0 victory over the local selection on Wednesday night at the Jalan Besar Stadium. The match was for the Singapore Olympic Foundation-Peter Lim Charity Cup, and both teams entertained a sell-out crowd for a good cause.
Raul Garcia scored the opener in the 29th minute before substitute Diego Costa added the second minutes before the end of regulation time.
Despite a low scoring game for his side against the Singapore Selection, coach Deigo Simeone was pleased with the match and was not surprised with the enthusiasm and level of determination shown by their opponent.
“It was a close game and very competitive, and I am not surprised with how Singapore played as from the first minute they were there to compete and I was happy with how the game went,” said Simeone.
When asked who in the Singapore side was worthy of a mention, the former Argentine international said that both Shahril Ishak and Hariss Harun did well in the match.
“I was pleased with the captains from both half; I’m impressed by their movements and their reading of the game and they managed to counter our attacks tonight,” he said of the two LionsXII players who wore the captain's armband in each half.
With most football fans in Singapore following the English Premier League closely, Simeone also felt that it was entirely up to the broadcast networks for Spanish football to make inroads in the local market.
“It all depends on the television broadcast, but Spanish league is still one of the most competitive in the world,” added the Copa America winner.
Wrapping up his final moments in the Southeast Asian country, Simeone recalled his most memorable moments.
“It was very hot and yesterday during the morning training (on Tuesday), it was hard for all of us, but when they were playing with the young kids in the afternoon, we all enjoyed it,” he said referring to Tuesday's festivities.
“It’s amazing and spectacular. The city has been great and we are comfortable here. It is a nice place and they (the players) enjoyed it much.”
