The battle for the 2013 RHB Singapore Cup will begin at the end of May as 12 clubs from the S.League will join four invited teams for the nation’s most coveted cup competition.

Philippines side Loyola Meralco Sparks will begin proceedings in the preliminary round against Razip Ismail’s Harimau Muda on May 26 at the Jalan Besar Stadium, while 2012 United Football League champions Global FC will travel to Choa Chu Kang Stadium on June 1 to take on defending champions Warriors FC.

The other invited teams are Laos league champions, Lao Police FC, who will face a tough challenge from Brunei DPMM FC on May 30 at the Jalan Besar Stadium, while Metfone C-League champions Boeung Ket Rubber Field will do battle with Tanjong Pagar United on May 31.

Boung Ket’s match was originally scheduled for May 30, but the fixture was moved back to a day later at the request of the Cambodian club.

“We have made a special request to move the match to Friday May 31 in order to allow for the Cambodian TV to air the match live for our fans back home,” team manager Be Makara explained.

There will also be an increase in prize money for the champions, first runners-up and second runners-up of the tournament, who will each receive $100,000, $60,000 and $40,000 respectively - up from $80,000, $40,000 and $20,000.

Unlike previous editions, where teams were drawn with a clear route to the final, clubs will now be drawn on a round-by-round basis. The clubs competing in each round of the competition shall be drawn in pairs, with the tie to be played on a knockout format. This shall be continued until the final of the competition.
