A new initiative will see one National Football League side participate in this year's Singapore League Cup
The 2013 StarHub League Cup will see a new addition to the tournament in the form of a National Football League (NFL) side under a new initiative.
Four NFL teams will battle it out to win the coveted spot to compete in the Starhub League Cup in an NFL play-off.
The four teams competing in the qualifiers are Singapore Recreation Club (SRC), Singapore Cricket Club (SCC), Admiralty FC and Sporting Westlake FC.
Admiralty FC will take on SCC for the first match, while SRC will take on Sporting Westlake FC in the other match. Both matches will take place on May 5 at Jalan Besar Stadium, with the first game kicking off at 5 p.m and the other at 7.45 p.m.
Both winners will eventually meet on the following week, May 12, at the Jalan Besar Stadium to decide who will be participating in the Starhub League Cup 2013, and $2,000 prize money will be presented to the winner as an added incentive on top of the opportunity to play in the League Cup.
This new move by the S.League is aimed at giving NFL teams an opportunity to experience the professional competitiveness level of a cup competition.
Mr Lim Chin, CEO S.League, who pioneered this new initiative, said: “We are pleased to involve the NFL teams in one of the biggest professional cup competitions in Singapore, as we have always regarded them as a big part of the local football fraternity. This is also a good chance for NFL to experience a professional level of football, which will aid in their long term development. We look forward to another year of quality football in the StarHub League Cup.”
The details of the 2013 StarHub League Cup Draw will be announced by the Football Association of Singapore soon.
