Protectors run down Jaguars in Queenstown

Tanjong Pagar United entered the game with so much momentum but fell short against a Home United side who recorded their first win of the season

On a cool evening, Tanjong Pagar United set the stage for Home United in the fourth round of the S.League at the Queenstown Stadium.

The Jaguars went in the game red tooth and claw to scratch all three points from the Protectors but their aimless tactics led to them not finding the net. Instead Home United emerged victorious with goals from Jordan Webb, Sirina Camara and Lee Kwan Woo.

The protectors started the game slowly, maintaining the majority of possession, unlike their travelling fans who were in full voice even before kickoff.

Home United had the first opportunity in the 7th minute through Hafiz Rahim who fooled defenders with his fancy footwork but was disappointed to strike his right-footed shot straight at the keeper.

Patrick Vallee was pacing in the technical area after seeing the Jaguars running out on the pitch looking rather toothless.

Lee Lim Saeng’s men deservedly took the lead in the closing five minutes of the first half when Hafiz did well to skip past the defenders.

At the 42nd minute mark, he spotted Jordan Webb’s run and nicked a pass through for the pacey midfielder to calmly toe-poke the ball past Aurelien Herisson.

The visitors came out in the second half much like they left the first – going straight for the goal with a shot from Hafiz that was parried away.

In the 52nd minute, the Protectors took advantage of a free-kick at the edge of the box to double their lead. A well-worked set piece allowed Sirina Camara to drive a rocket into the bottom corner for a photo finish.

The firing form of Home continued and in the 61st minute, their relentless assault paid off. Firdaus Idros made a blistering run down the right flank and found an unmarked Webb outside the box.

The No. 11 picked out Lee Kwan Woo who was let through by shoddy defending and the Korean put the ball past the keeper for Home’s third of the night.

The Jaguars struggled to make anything work upfront except for Kamel Ramdani’s low diving header, which was well-blocked by Shahril Jantan between the posts.

A disappointing night ended with Ismael Benhamed heading over the bar to see the Protectors regain life in the S.League with an emphatic 3-0 victory.

Tanjong Pagar will take on Hougang United next week, while Home face Geylang International.
