Woodlands Wellington coach Salim Moin targets top-three finish with new squad

A slew of new signings, both local and foreign, means that the wooden-spoonists from 2012 will start the upcoming season with a fresh-looking squad as they seek to do better

Woodlands Wellington Football Club officially unveiled its squad for the upcoming 2013 S.League season at a press conference held at the Woodlands Galaxy Community Centre on Saturday afternoon, in conjunction with its annual Fan Fare for their supporters.

Amongst the familiar faces at the Woodlands Stadium this year are goalkeeper Ahmadulhaq Che Omar, midfielder Goh Swee Swee, former national player Farizal Basri and captain Armanizam Dolah.

Despite finishing the previous season at the wrong end of the table, fans can certainly look forward to an exciting season as the club has signed several prominent local players as well as promising foreign ones.

Speaking at the event, head coach Salim Moin targeted a top-three finish, which he believes is realistic given the number of quality new players he has brought in.

“Last year I inherited the squad but this year, I have selected them and I have faith in all of the players. We will better our position than the previous year and I am targeting a top-three finish for this season," he declared.

The ambitious target set by Salim was backed by club chairman Hussainar Abdul Aziz, who said: “I gave him [Salim] the free rein to build his squad and if he is confident of a top three finish, the management and everyone at the club will support him all the way.”

The Rams have shored up their defence with the signing of former Hougang United captain, Shariff Abdul Samat and former Singapore goalkeeper Yazid Yasin from Geylang International.

There will definitely be stiff competition for places in midfield as the club has snapped up former LionsXII player Taufiq Rahmat and ex-Home United utility man Rosman Sulaiman, who will vie with former Netherlands Under-21 and national futsal player Khalid Hamdaoui and ex-Albirex Niigata (S) midfield maestro Atsushi Shimono for spot in the starting line-up.

South Korean Moon Soon Ho is the only player to survive the foreign cull at Woodlands from last season and the 31-year-old striker will team up with fellow countryman Cho Sung Hwan and Chang Jo Yoon.

27-year-old centre-back Cho last played in the Challengers League with 2012 Championship winners FC Pocheon for two seasons after joining the club from K-League side Ansan Hallelujah FC the year before.

The Challengers League is the top amateur football league in Korea, and widely regarded as the nation's fourth-tier league.

Fans who are keen to watch their beloved Rams in action can do so on February 5 as they will face Singtel Cosmo League champions, SCC Firsts at the Woodlands Stadium, with the friendly scheduled to kick-off at 7.30pm.
