Safuwan Baharudin named 2012 AFF Suzuki Cup Under-23 Player of the Tournament

Despite playing in his first major international tournament, the youngster put in domineering performances at the back to be named the U23 player of the regional tournament

Safuwan Baharudin has been named as the 2012 AFF Suzuki Cup Under23 Player of the Tournament after a series of commanding displays in the competition.

In only his first major international tournament, Safuwan started in all of Singapore’s matches and was part of a backline that only conceded five goals on their way to a record fourth Asean title.

Thailand’s goalkeeper Kawin Thamsatchanan was a close contender for the award, but he was pipped by the youngest member of the victorious Singapore squad for his powess in the air and fearless display on the pitch, which helped keep Golden Boot winner Teerasil Dangda on a tight leash in the two-legged final.

This award is a joint effort by Nike and to recognise the most outstanding under-23 player at the AFF Suzuki Cup.

Nike was also the proud sponsor of various national teams, including Singapore, who participated in the competition, as they outfitted the teams in environmentally-friendly jerseys.

The jerseys were made from 100 per cent recycled materials, with 13 recycled water bottles in addition to recycled polyester used in the manufacturing of the kit.

The kits are also 20 per cent lighter than previous jersey, and features cutting-edge technology to help players temperature cool, is available for sale. More information can be found at Nike’s website.
