Sporting unveil provisional squad for NexLions Cup

Famed for producing world-class attackers like Cristiano Ronaldo, Sporting Clube de Portugal is set to unleash their future stars at the NexLions Cup
If their track record of producing world-class attackers is any indication, it might be a good bet that some of the young stars from the Sporting Clube de Portugal squad participating in the upcoming NexLions Cup could become household names in the not-too-distant future.

Forwards Alexandre Guedes and Carlos Mane might be relatively unknown outside of Portugal, but the pair of 18-year-olds know they could potentially follow in the footsteps of previous Sporting luminaries such as Hugo Viana, Ricardo Quaresma, Luis Figo and of course, Cristiano Ronaldo.

Other names to keep an eye on are Brazilian midfielder Farley Rosa, Serbian playmaker Luka Stojanovic and Cameroonian defender Fabrice Fokobo. Amongst the five, Stojanovic has arguably the highest profile, with nine goals in 27 appearances for the Serbian Under-17 national team.

All five are already playing for Sporting’s B team in Portuguese second-tier Segunda Liga division, and could potentially line up against Manchester United in their opening game of the NexLions Cup on December 14.

Sporting U19 coach Abel Ferreira, who once scored against the Red Devils in a Champions League tie as a player with the club, believes his players will rise to the occasion.

“We are looking forward to the challenge of pitting our young players against some of the best up-and‐coming talents of world football at the NexLions Cup. No doubt it will be tough against Manchester United in our opening match, but I’m confident that my boys will be up for it,” he said.

The NexLions Cup is a joint initiative between the Football Association of Singapore [FAS] and Kirkwall, who are exclusive partners of Manchester United Soccer Schools and Sporting Lisbon Academy in South East Asia.

Tickets start at just $12 and are available at Ticketbooth outlets and online at
