An estimated total of $65,000 was raised through various means for ex-Woodlands player S. Anthonysamy, who was left paralysed from the neck down after an injury 16 years ago.
The S. Anthonysamy fundraising dinner was successfully held at the Amara Hotel on Tuesday evening.
Attended by officials from Football Association of Singapore, S.League players and fans from various clubs including Woodlands Wellington FC supporters, the dinner was a sold-out with 42 tables, each consisting of ten seats, being taken up.
An estimated total of $65,000 was raised through various means such as donations and auctions during the dinner itself.
The dinner was the brainchild of former national striker and current LionsXII coach V.Sundramoorthy who has been a close friend of Anthony since their playing days.
Anthony was a former player with Woodlands before he was met with a tragic football injury 16 years ago during a friendly match against Selangor in 1996 which left him paralysed from the neck down.
He has been wheelchair-bound since the accident, and unable to seek employment due to his condition. He has been cared for by his devoted wife Keralin, who resigned from her job as a computer instructor soon after the incident to care for her husband.
All proceeds from the fundraiser will go to Anthony, while the subsidies made available by S.League for the dinner will be donated to the former WWFC player.
