Fandi Ahmad's new-look side fell to the S.League strugglers 3-1 as they continue preparations for the 2014 Malaysian Super League season
Singapore legend Fandi Ahmad saw his new team fall to Aide Iskandar's boys at the ITE College Ang Mo Kio, which featured his son Irfan Fandi in the starting line-up, who is believed to be back on holiday.
A quick counter-attack on the half hour saw Afiq Yunos bring down Sahil Suhaimi in the box, with the striker converting the penalty himself to give the Young Lions the lead.
Goalkeeper Syazwan Buhari then made a few good stops as his team stepped up their game and found two more goals in the second half. Muhaymin Salim volleyed in a superb strike in the 65th minute and two minutes later, Amy Recha tapped home Shameer Aziq's square ball to render Ignatius Ang's 69th-minute strike mere consolation.
While he was pleased his men created many chances, Fandi acknowleged that his side had to be more ruthless with their opportunities and also singled out fitness as a key area to work on.
"We'll need to fine-tune our finishing," the 51-year-old told the official LionsXII website after the game.
"We had two to three open chances in the first half which we should have buried. Also, the fitness was a bit suspect especially in the second half. We were a bit down in the last 35 minutes, whereas Young Lions were the fitter and stronger side."
Safuwan Baharudin also went off during the game with a suspected knee injury, with Fandi unsure about the extent of it as the defender had gone to the hospital for a medical check-up.
The LionsXII will be headed to Indonesia next for a training tour, with a friendly against Persis Solo FC on January 4 reportedly amongst one of the games they will play.
