President and Prime Minister congratulate LionsXII on MSL title win

PM Lee Hsien Loong was present at the Singapore side's 4-0 victory over Felda United, which sealed the title, and handed the trophy to captain Shahril Ishak at the end of the game

Following the LionsXII's triumph in the Malaysian Super League (MSL) on Tuesday night, there were numerous congratulatory messages flying around from supporter. Even figures in the top echelon of Singapore, namely President Tony Tan and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, joined in.

Although Tan was not able to attend the match due to a prior engagement, he posted his congratulations on his personal Facebook page after the final whistle. 

“Congratulations to LionsXII on tonight’s victory against KL Felda United, and winning the Malaysian Super League on home ground!," he wrote.

“Sundram’s team of young Singapore players did us proud.

“Though they started the tournament as underdogs, LionsXII displayed courage, determination and most of all teamwork to achieve the historic win. Well done!”

Present at the Jalan Besar Stadium was PM Lee, who was seated beside Football Association of Singapore president and member of parliament for Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC, Zainudin Nordin. 

“Congrats LionsXII – champions of the Malaysian Super League! What a match!," he wrote on his Facebook page as well.

“We were still 0-0 at half time, but four excellent goals in the second half won the championship for us. I am very proud of our Lions XII squad.

“Despite their youth, they played with poise throughout the season. I wish them many more wins in future matches. Well done LionsXII!”

Joining the fray to express his joy was acting minister for culture, community and youth Lawrence Wong, who also took to social media to convey his message. 

“Congratulations to the Lions XII on winning the Malaysian Super League title!!," he posted on Facebook.

“The team defied the critics and became the first Singapore team to win a Malaysian title since 1994! It's a historic win for the team, and for all Singaporeans cheering for them - at home and abroad.

“With so many promising players under 23, the future is definitely looking up for Singapore soccer!”

Also in the celebratory mood were minister for foreign affairs K. Shanmugam and Ter Ser Luck, ministry of trade and industry.

“Congrats to LionsXII for winning the 2013 Malaysia Super League," Shanmugam posted. "Brings back memories of the yesteryears.”

“We have something to prove tonight and we proved it," Teo added. "We are the CHAMPIONS! Thank you LionsXII!"
