Manchester United have opened talks with winger Nani as they look to tie him down to a four-year contract, according to The Sun.

Despite having two years yet to run on his current contract, the new deal would see Nani's basic wage rise from £90,000 to a reported £130,000 a week.

The increase would see him join the same bracket as Old Trafford's highest earners and cement his place as one of Sir Alex Ferguson's key men.

The winger, 24, has been in inspired form this season and Ferguson seems confident that the Portuguese international can surpass his former team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo's achievements and become a United legend.

Despite an unconvincing start to life in England, the £18 million signing from Sporting Lisbon has improved rapidly since 2007, and was last year voted player's player of the year by his teammates.

United also appear ready to spend further on their squad after reports recorded a profit of £175 million over the last six months.
