The Ivory Coast international is keen to secure European qualification, with the Magpies sitting in eighth place in the Premier League, though admits it will be a "tough" challenge

Newcastle midfielder Cheick Tiote believes the club are capable of sealing a return to European competition this season and is even eyeing a Champions League berth.

Alan Pardew's side qualified for the Europa League in the 2011-12 campaign by finishing fifth in the Premier League, though their exploits on the continent the following year saw the club's form decline as they ended the season in 16th.

The Magpies have improved this season, though, and now sit seven points off the top four, and Tiote believes the club can overhaul the sides above them to claim Champions League qualification if they maintain their current form.

"At the moment we are in a good position. We are happy because last year it was not the same,” Tiote told the Evening Chronicle.

"Now we can try to win every game. If we keep trying that we can gain a Europa League place or even a Champions League place."

Despite his confidence, the Ivory Coast international is not underestimating the challenge Newcastle face over the remainder of the season if they want to secure European football.

"It is going to be tough because there are a lot of good teams in this league," he added.
