Former Newcastle striker Ranger charged with rape

The 22-year-old, who was released by the Premier League outfit earlier this year on suspicion of assault, will appear before Newcastle Magistrates' Court on August 21
Former Newcastle forward Nile Ranger has been charged with rape following an incident in Jesmond on January 23.

Northumbria Police confirmed to Goal that Ranger will appear in court on August 21.

A statement read: "A rape was reported to Police on Thursday January 24 2013, and that related to an incident that happened in the early hours of Wednesday January 23 at a hotel in Jesmond, Newcastle.

"Nile Ranger, 22, of Bailey Close, Harringey, London, has been charged with rape. He is due to appear before Newcastle Magistrates' Court on August 21."

In March 2013 Ranger was released by Newcastle by mutual consent just prior to being arrested on suspicion of assault, following a string of controversies while at the north-east club.
