The Wigan Athletic manager is the Merseyside club's first-choice candidate to succeed David Moyes, who will officially take charge of Manchester United on July 1

Leighton Baines has hailed Roberto Martinez as a "terrific manager" as Everton line up the Spaniard to succeed David Moyes at Goodison Park.

Goal exclusively revealed in May that the 39-year-old is the Merseyside club's first-choice replacement for Moyes, who will officially take charge at Manchester United on July 1.

Baines, who is currently on international duty with England, insists the managerial speculation linked with Everton is not at the forefront of his thoughts but has praised the Wigan Athletic manager for his impact at the DW Stadium.

"It all sort of seems to be going on at the moment," Baines told reporters.

"Thankfully we are in camp so I am keeping it at the back of my mind for now and concentrating more on England.

"Roberto Martinez has been linked with the job. He is a terrific manager so we will just wait and see."

Everton chairman Bill Kenwright revealed on Wednesday that Martinez is just one of a number of candidates targeted to succeed Moyes and defender Phil Jagielka insists he will support the club's final decision.

"I will be delighted whoever comes in," Jagielka said.

"Everton is a massive club and hopefully we can get a fantastic manager."
