Tottenham not giving up on top four yet, insists Vertonghen

Ahead of a nervy finale to the top four race, the Spurs stopper believes his side are still very much in the running for the Champions League spot despite Arsenal’s midweek win
Jan Vertonghen insists Tottenham must stay focused as they vie with Arsenal for Champions League qualification on Sunday.

The Gunners' midweek victory saw them leapfrog Spurs onto the 70-point mark, just one ahead of their north London rivals with one game remaining.

9/4 Tottenham are 9/4 with Coral to finish in the top four
And with Arsenal facing a Newcastle team which now know they are safe on Sunday, many have ruled out a top-four spot for Andre Villas Boas men.

But despite the predictions, Vertonghen insists Spurs are still hopeful of pipping their rivals to the final Champions League spot as they prepare to entertain a weak Sunderland side on Sunday.

“All we can do is win our games and it’s important for us to keep believing,” he told the club's official website. “We would have to do that anyway on Sunday, so let’s hope we can.”

The Belgian stalwart is hoping last week’s valiant comeback away to Stoke strengthens the belief within the Tottenham ranks.

“We knew we had to fight for this result,” he added. “We went 1-0 down but fought all the way, kept playing our football and that was important.

“We knew we could win here and we showed passion, played our football and I think we deserved to win.”
