Wigan dealt potential survival blow as Alcaraz suffers hamstring injury

The Paraguay defender's return from a groin problem has coincided with the Latics' upturn in form in recent weeks, but he could be sidelined again after the defeat to West Ham
Wigan's bid for Premier League survival has received another setback after Antolin Alcaraz was forced off in the 2-0 defeat to West Ham on Saturday.

The Latics are already missing Ivan Ramis in defence after the Spaniard's campaign was ended by a knee injury and could now add Alcaraz to their list of absentees at the back.

Roberto Martinez revealed that the Paraguayan had suffered a hamstring injury and admitted that he was sorely missed in the defeat at Upton Park having lasted only 16 minutes.

"The injury to Antolin made for a very difficult afternoon for us," the Wigan boss told reporters.

"He's got a soft tissue injury to the back of his hamstring, and so we'll assess him this week before discovering exactly how long he'll be out for.

"It's obviously a real negative note, and had an effect on how we wanted to play."

Wigan have lost only three of the nine games Alcaraz has featured in since his return from a six-month lay-off due a groin problem.
