Tiote sees signs of improvement from Newcastle despite Stoke loss

The 26-year-old is remaining positive despite his side's failure to register a win in their last seven matches, including losses in their last four Premier League games

Newcastle midfielder Cheikh Tiote feels his side are showing signs of a return to form despite losing to Stoke City on Wednesday.

The Magpies had taken the lead at the Britannia Stadium through Papiss Cisse, but goals from Jonathan Walters and Cameron Jerome inside the final nine minutes left the visitors empty handed.

Newcastle have not registered a win in seven games in all competitions – including losing their last four Premier League games on the trot - but the 26-year-old midfielder has insisted that there are positives to take from the performance.

"This was so difficult for the team to take,” Tiote told reporters.

"We played well and were the better team on the pitch. We tried to pass the ball well and scored the first goal, but after that we were unlucky because it was two sloppy goals that cost us the game.

"Everyone is very disappointed, but we were much brighter than we have been recently and had more energy on the pitch.

"If you play well like we did, then you expect to win the game, so if we continue to play like this, we will get three points again very soon."

Newcastle will hope to return to form with a victory against Wigan on Monday night, with Alan Pardew’s side lying just two points above the relegation zone in 14th place.
