thumbnail Hello,

The French international has been disappointed by the Magpies lacklustre start to the new season and says they have to improve if they are to climb the Premier League table

Newcastle midfielder Yohan Cabaye is hoping his side can improve following a somewhat underwhelming run of form in the opening months of the Premier League season.

The Magpies slipped to a surprise 1-0 home defeat at the hands of West Ham United last weekend, a result which leaves them sitting 10th in the table with just one win in their last their six league outings.

Alan Pardew's side have gained a number of positive results, including wins over Tottenham and West Brom, as well as draws with Liverpool and Everton, and while the Tyneside club have also performed excellently in Europe, the former Lille man feels that they need to do better if they are to match the fifth-place finish they achieved last term.

He told the club's official website: "It has not been bad, but it has not been good enough either. We have played well but we can play better than we have done."

A number of injuries and suspensions to key players such as Tim Krul, Fabricio Coloccini and Cheikh Tiote have not helped Newcastle's cause, but Cabaye refused to make any excuses for their displays this campaign and believes they can turn their fortunes around.

He added: "Every game has been tough and we have had a lot of injuries and suspensions. It seems like every game we are missing a big player for one reason or another.

"That has made things difficult but we need to keep our confidence and keep working hard, because if we stop working then it will be very difficult to get up towards the top of the league again."
