Santon hoping to maintain Newcastle form after Italy return

The 21-year-old has been rewarded for his superb performances for the Magpies so far this season with a recall to the national team for a friendly clash with France
Newcastle defender Davide Santon is hoping to secure a regular place in the Italy squad by maintaining his good performances at club level.

The ex-Inter full-back received his first international call-up for 20 months for his country's friendly match against France on Wednesday.

And, ahead of a potential meeting with Magpies team-mate Yohan Cabaye, the Italian has expressed hope that he can continue earning international recognition by playing well in the Premier League.

He told the club's official website: "I am so happy because it has been a really long time since I was in the senior international team.

"It will be really nice, especially if I play against my friend Yohan. Even though it is a friendly, we want to win and I am excited for the match and to see all my friends from Italy.

"But I want to come back from the game and then get a win for Newcastle against Swansea.

"My team is Newcastle and I want to win games here first of all. If we are winning and I am playing well, then I will hopefully continue to make the Italy squad."
