Daniel Sturridge has been ruled out of Chelsea's Premier League clash against Stoke City on Saturday with a hamstring injury.

The 23-year-old picked up the injury against Juventus on Wednesday with initial hope that the he could be fit in time for the weekend's follow-up at Stamford Bridge.

However, Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo has now confirmed that Sturridge will miss the visit of Stoke but is confident of a recovery in time for the trip to London rivals Arsenal the following week.

"Sturridge is better but not quite ready for tomorrow,' the Italian told reporters.

"We'll have to assess him, if he doesn't make the League Cup [against Wolves], it shouldn't be much longer.

"Injuries can happen to any player, we go into the game not thinking about injuries."

Di Matteo also warned that new Stoke signing Michael Owen could pose a real threat to the Blues’ defence.

“He’s a natural goalscorer,” the manager stated. “He’s certainly a very good signing for Stoke.

“I was a little bit surprised because he’s not a tall player like the others.

“But he’s certainly a dangerous player and I’m sure they will benefit from his qualities.”
