Jagielka vows to stop Newcastle duo Ba and Cisse

The England centre-back says the strikers are "two great signings" but believes his Everton side can stop them playing well when they visit Goodison Park on Monday
Everton defender Phil Jagielka is relishing the prospect of taking on Newcastle at Goodison Park on Monday night and says he hopes he can stop duo Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse from playing well.

The 30-year-old, who has made 146 appearances for the Merseyside club, admitted to being impressed with Alan Pardew's men last season, picking out their strength in attacking areas as a particular highlight.

But, despite the obvious threat posed by the Magpies, the England centre-back claims his side are excited by the prospect of Newcastle coming to town.

"Newcastle are up there competing and had a fantastic campaign last season," he told the club's official website.

"We love playing the night games – it’s a special atmosphere. Games between us and them are normally quite close and I am sure it will be another fantastic night at Goodison."

Jagielka also identified Newcastle's Senegalese strike duo of Papiss Cisse and Demba Ba as the visitors' most potent assets.

He added: "Cisse took all the plaudits when he arrived with the goals he scored. Demba Ba led the way before he came so it was two great signings for them.

"They have plenty of creativity in the midfield as well so it is going to be a tough game. It is definitely a challenge we look forward to.

"You don’t want to play against people who aren’t expected to score but who then do so – it makes you look bad.

"So you want to be playing against these guys who are expected to score goals for fun because if you stop them it breeds confidence.

"Myself and the rest of the defenders prefer to play against those who everyone has come to watch. Hopefully we will stop them playing well."
