The Lilywhites playmaker is set to return to his old club, despite the two sides not yet having agreed a fee for the Dutchman

Tottenham midfielder Rafael van der Vaart is on the verge of joining Hamburg, according to the player's agent.

The German club have had a long-standing interest in re-signing their former talisman, and had an earlier inferior offer for the player rejected by the White Hart Lane outfit, prompting Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas to brand the Bundesliga side as “disrespectful”.

However, Van der Vaart's representative Roberto Geerlings has confirmed that the 29-year-old is on his way to Hamburg to undergo a medical, but, as yet, no fee has been agreed between the two clubs.

"I can confirm that Rafael is on his way to Hamburg now for a medical," Geerlings told reporters.

"No fee has been agreed, but when a player goes for a medical it is clear that the two parties intend to find a solution."

Van der Vaart scored 28 goals in 78 appearances for the North Londoners following his deadline day switch from Real Madrid in 2010, and fast became a fan favourite at White Hart Lane.

However, the captures of Gylfi Sigurdsson and Moussa Dembele this summer have meant competition for the Dutchman’s preferred position has increased – with this and sustained interest from Hamburg convincing him to move on.
