The Uruguayan scored 111 goals in 159 games for the Dutch club, winning an Eredivisie title in the process, before moving to the Reds in January 2011.

Suarez's goals have pushed Liverpool back into the Champions League this season, doing enough for him to be named PFA Player of the Year, but he revealed on Wednesday his desire to one day return to Ajax.

De Boer told Goal of the forward's enthusiasm: "We're definitely interested if any of our former players are wishing to return.

"We do have interest as our former players certainly know about Ajax culture but we have to learn if they're fit into our gameplay.

"Suarez has also become a bigger player than when he was at Ajax few years ago but, of course, it's a nice thing to hear that from Suarez. It's a good sign for Ajax."
