Reports had suggested that the Swedish midfielder was due to return to Russia after it emerged that he arrived at the club suffering from a "micro fracture" in his back which is likely to keep him out of action for at least four weeks.

After signing on loan until the end of the season to help fill the void left by the injured Aaron Ramsey, the club's decision to bring in an unfit replacement had been questioned.

Manager Arsene Wenger confirmed on Sunday that he knew of Kallstrom's injury, explaining that, if he had had more time, he would have looked at other alternatives.

When contacted by Perform on Monday, a club spokesman insisted that the 31-year-old would remain at the Emirates, confirming that Kallstrom remains part of Wenger's plans and that Spartak will continue to pay his wages until he is fit.

Arsenal have a busy schedule throughout February and March, with Premier League encounters against five of the top seven teams as well as a Champions League round-of-16 tie with Bayern Munich and an FA Cup fifth-round match with Liverpool all in the space of eight weeks.
