Frank Farina continues to reinforce his team ahead of the 2013-14 campaign, bringing in the versatile defender on a free transfer to add to competition at the back

Sydney FC have signed Serbian defender Nikola Petkovic for the upcoming A-League season.

The experienced 27-year-old joins the Sky Blues from Serbian club Red Star Belgrade and will arrive at pre-season training in Sydney next week ahead of the start of the new season in October.

Listed as a left-back but equally capable of filling in anywhere in defence, Petkovic will bolster an already impressive Sydney side that includes Italian star Alessandro Del Piero and veteran Brett Emerton.

Sydney FC coach Frank Farina is looking forward to linking up with Petkovic and believes the defender will slot straight into his side.

"Nikola's signing is an excellent piece of business for Sydney FC and completes our squad," Farina said.

"He can play anywhere across the back four and will give our defence strength and depth.

"I am expecting big things from him this season and believe he will have a big influence on the squad."

Sydney FC kick off the new A-League season with a match at Allianz Stadium against Newcastle and Petkovic is hoping he will be fit enough to take on the Jets on October 11.

"This is an exciting new challenge for me and it's a privilege to be signing for Australia's biggest and most recognisable football club," Petkovic said.

"Sydney FC has a great reputation and I can't wait to wear the Sky Blue jersey and meet the members.

"The opening game at Allianz Stadium is going to be huge and is one I'm very much looking forward to."
