Wigan capture Manchester United midfielder Powell on loan

The former Crewe youngster moves to the DW Stadium in search of first-team football and may link up in midfield with Everton target James McCarthy, who looks set to stay
Manchester United midfielder Nick Powell has joined Wigan on a season-long loan deal, Latics chairman Dave Whelan has confirmed.

The 19-year-old, who signed for the Red Devils from Crewe Alexandra last summer, made six appearances for United last term, scoring one goal.

Speaking to the BBC, Whelan enthused: "We obviously had Tom Cleverley on loan and I think United were happy with the job we did with him, so it's good news that we've got the lad.

"We've done the deal for a season-long loan."

Wigan have also been boosted by the news that midfielder James McCarthy looks set to stay with the Championship side after Everton failed to meet the Latics' valuation.
