Wolfsburg have stepped up their pursuit of Bayern Munich midfielder Luiz Gustavo as they aim to add some fresh blood to their midfield.
The Brazil international has fallen down the pecking order at the Allianz Arena since the arrival of Javi Martinez last year and the summer signings of Mario Gotze and Thiago Alcantara.
Wolfsburg sporting director Klaus Allofs confirmed last week that they were interested in signing the player, and director Mike Schussler has now revealed they have opened discussions with the European champions in order to make their interest known.
"We had contact and I have placed our interest," he was quoted as saying by Bild. "We want things to run correctly."
Luiz Gustavo, who joined Bayern from Hoffenheim for £14.5 million in 2011, has a contract with the Bavarians until 2015.
