It is no easy feat to fill the shoes of a goalkeeper as talented as David de Gea, but Thibaut Courtois has done exactly just that at the Vicente Calderon.
Since arriving on-loan from Chelsea two seasons ago in 2011, the young Belgian has firmly established himself as first-choice between the sticks for Atletico Madrid, as well as emerging as one of the best goalkeepers in Europe.
Courtois’s most recent high-profile outing was in the recent Copa del Rey final, where he made several impressive saves in a 2-1 extra-time win over arch-rivals Real Madrid.
It is no wonder that Los Rojiblancos coach Diego Simeone wants to keep hold of the talented 21-year-old, and he admitted as much at a press conference after their 2-0 win over a Singapore Selection side on Wednesday night.
“We are currently working to at least have him with us for one more year,” the Argentine said.
The player himself has recently voiced his desire to stay at the club in order to play regularly, instead of returning back to Stamford Bridge to play second fiddle to Petr Cech.
