Following confirmation of Fandi Ahmad's appointment as the new Head Coach of the LionsXII, Football Association of Singapore (FAS) today announced that Nazri Nasir will join the new-look Singapore side for next season as assistant coach.
The 42-year-old was selected by Fandi to be his right-hand man, and was previously in charge of the Singapore National Under-15 side. His departure from the team, along with Dejan Gluscevic was reported last month, following poor campaigns in AFF and AFC youth competitions in 2013.
"It’s like a dream to work with Fandi as a coach," Nazri stated via a press release through FAS.
“Even when Fandi was coach and I was playing at SAFFC, he treated me like a coach to the other players on the pitch. Fandi has a bundle of experience and I want to learn as much from him as possible.”
Both former Singapore internationals were part of the 1994 Malaysia League and Cup winning side and were also together with SAFFC (now Warriors FC). With the new season kicking off soon, Nazri has already stated his intentions of making a few changes to the team, adding: "I want players to be serious in training, but I also hope there would be no barriers between coaches and players so that off the pitch, we are friends. I want them to feel good enough to talk to me about themselves and their families, not just about football."
"I’ve seen the squad and I think we have a good mixture of national team players and other young players. I hope to see the midfielders arriving late in the box to be more involved with the attack to provide more goals."
The LionsXII will be without three key players for next season, namely captain Shahril Ishak, vice-captain Hariss Harun and defender Baihakki Khaizan. All three players have made a move to Johor in the Malaysia Super League and the Malaysia Premier League. Afiq Yunos, who is currently on duty with the Singapore U23 side in the SEA Games and several other Courts Young Lions players have been mooted to make the move to LionsXII for next season.
