Former Orlando Pirates’ Okonkwo on his way to MP Black Aces

Former Pirates midfielder Onyekachi Okonkwo is expected to sign with MP Black Aces early next week

Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Onyekachi Okonkwo could soon sign a contract with the new PSL boys Mpumalanga Black Aces.

The Nigerian international was released by Pirates earlier this week, and he immediately received a call from Aces for a possible move.

A source close to Okonkwo confirmed to Goal that the two parties are still engaged in negotiations, but revealed that nothing has been finalized.

“Aces gave him a call on Tuesday and they are still negotiating, but he hasn’t committed himself to anything as yet. So, nothing has been finalized,” revealed our source.

Apparently, the 31-year-old Okonkwo didn’t want to immediately commit himself to Aces, because the club was about to appoint a new coach, and also because their promotion to the PSL hasn’t been confirmed.

“Remember Aces didn’t have a coach and they still have a case (pending). So, he didn’t want to make a decision without knowing all that.

“I am sure he is aware that Clive has been appointed, and I am sure he will now decide on whether to join them or not,” added our source.

AmaZayoni have since appointed Clive Barker as their new head coach on a two-year contract, but it remains to be seen whether Okonkwo will be tempted to join the former Bafana mentor.
