The 19-year-old admits his moment of brilliance at the Maracana was prompted by some paternal encouragement, and is looking forward to kicking on next season for Arsenal

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has revealed a motivational text message from his father inspired him to score for England against Brazil at the Maracana.

Chamberlain scored England's first goal in a pulsating 2-2 draw in Rio with a rasping volley from just outside the box - his third for the national side.

And despite the fact his father Mark afterwards admitted to missing the goal because he fell asleep, Oxlade-Chamberlain revealed his moment of brilliance was prompted by some paternal encouragement.

“Dad sent me a text before the Brazil game saying, ‘Make sure you do something good,’ he told the Daily Mirror.

“The next day he sent another one which said, ‘I like it when you listen to me.’

“My dad wants me to score more goals. He’s always telling me to do that. He’s right, because I want me to score more goals - I know that’s one of the things I need to improve on for next season.

“I want to improve my overall game. You can always keep learning and getting better. I know I still have a lot to do.

“What I want to do is kick on next season. It was a dream end to the season, to score at the Maracana.

“It was a good end for Arsenal as well. And when I get back for pre-season, I will be really looking forward to next season.”
