The Netherlands head coach insists the Galatasaray playmaker will not regain the national team captaincy until he improves his physical conditionNetherlands head coach Louis van Gaal has criticised the fitness of midfielder Wesley Sneijder following his side's 3-0 friendly victory over Indonesia on Friday.
Robin van Persie was handed the captain's armband for the clash, and Van Gaal insists Galatasaray star Sneijder will not regain the honour - nor his place in the starting XI - until he improves his physical condition.
"He wasn't fully fit and he hasn't been fit for a whole year," Van Gaal told SBS6.
"You could see that on the pitch. As long as he isn't in shape, he can't be in the team and he can't be captain."
Reflecting on the victory for Oranje, Van Gaal was critical of the first-half performance, though he did admit his side improved drastically after the interval.
"In the first half we were not relaxed when we had the ball. We also missed a lot of chances so if you're still at 0-0 before half-time, something has gone wrong with the display," he said.
"The second half was much better. Each player was better than another, but everyone played their part in this victory."
