The Republic of Ireland manager is monitoring the Aston Villa centre-back's fitness ahead of a potential return to international action against Georgia or Faroe Islands

Giovanni Trapattoni is considering recalling Aston Villa; defender ;Richard Dunne to the Republic of Ireland squad, suggesting that he has an outside chance of featuring in the World Cup qualifier against Faroe Islands on June 7.

The 33-year-old has not played for his country since Euro 2012 thanks to injury and looks set to leave his club when his contract expires at the end of June but is being monitored by the Irish medical team as the squad prepare to take on England in a friendly on Wednesday.

The former Juventus manager maintains that the centre-back, who has won 75 caps since making his debut for the Boys in Green in 2000, is still a key component of his team.

Ahead of their friendlies with England and Georiga, Trapattoni told reporters: "I spoke with him and I clarified his position, his position with the club and his position for us. We need Richard in the future.

"Now is England and Georgia; the Faroes is a qualifier but he would have to be 100 per cent fit. Don't forget, this injury has been 10 months, one year. It was a bad injury and then he had surgery.

"There are two or three questions: he is without a club; he is many months without a game and it's a qualifier but, for us, he will be important again in the future."

Trapattoni is unwilling to jeopardise Dunne's chances of finding a new club with the possibility of an injury picked up while on national duty.

"I said: 'Richard, we will help you because you deserve respect but you have no team at this moment and you must be careful because an injury could be for you very, very dangerous'," the Ireland boss explained.

"We have more respect for him. I said we will go step by step. We have these two opportunities and we can assess his condition after the next two or three days.

"Sure, I want to help him. He will not start the game but, during the game, depending on the score, we could give him an opportunity to play with us."
