Ex-Leeds and Manchester City defender Danny Mills believes David Moyes can prosper at Manchester United if he replaces the retiring Sir Alex Ferguson as he is in the same mould of the Red Devils legend.

Sir Alex announced on Wednesday that he was bringing his 26-year tenure at Old Trafford to a close at the end of the season, after accruing a tally of 38 trophies.

Goal.com exclusively revealed soon after that Moyes had been pinpointed as the Scot's replacement, and Mills believes the Everton manager shares the same ideals on the game as his predecessor.

"I don't envy the new manager going in, it is going to be a fantastic opportunity for somebody and, as a betting man, you would have to put money on David Moyes," Mills told Goal.com.

"He doesn't have European experience and doesn't have the experience of big money, but he's in the mould of Fergie. He has the same work ethic and the same ethics of how he wants to play the game."

Mills admits he was shocked to hear of Sir Alex's decision to depart, but believes there would have been several factors that the 71-year-old carefully considered.

He continued: "[Sir Alex used to talk] about the longevity of the club; how it's in a great position, how this is the greatest squad ever and that he's possibly going to go on for 10 years. I don't think anybody really saw this coming.

"And then you try and break [his decision to leave] down. His chief executive and good friend, David Gill, is going. I think that may have played a part in his thinking. They've had such a good relationship and he probably wants to finish at the top.

"He's looking at it thinking, Manchester City are going to strengthen next year, Chelsea are going to strengthen next year, can we win another title? Can we win the Champions League again?

"The Champions League is so difficult to win, the league is going to be harder next year and maybe he thought 'I've done everything I possibly can'."

Fans and pundits alike have suggested that United losing the vital cog in the Old Trafford machine may allow other clubs a chance to wrestle back the title next season, and Mills agrees.

But the former right-back does believe that Sir Alex has left the club in as good a position as possible for their dominance of English football to continue.

"This club, that he loves, is now in the best place possible for somebody else to come in and start over," he continued. "But, there will be a lot of clubs and a lot of people doing somersaults that Fergie's gone.

"Without a doubt he has been the best manager in Premier League history. On the balance of what he has done, you have to say he knows exactly what he's doing. He could have stayed on for another 10 years.

"What he has turned that club into is a global success and a global business. Fergie has been a phenomenal manager, it's incredible what he has done and he leaves the club in a strong position and a legacy that will go on for years and years and years."
