Pearce praises Young Lions' display after Under-21s romp to Sweden win

The 50-year-old was quick to praise his young charges after they produced a fine display to ease to a comfortable victory over the Scandanavian side at the Bescot Stadium
Stuart Pearce has lauded the performance of his England Under-21 side following their 4-0 friendly win over Sweden.

The Three Lions started their preparation for this summer's European Championships in ideal fashion as goals from Connor Wickham and Jonjo Shelvey plus a double from Tom Ince secured an easy victory.

Pearce revealed that he was pleased with the manner of the display, and could find nothing but positives to take from the game.

He told ESPN: "I thought the passing was good, the tempo from the outset of the game was fantastic, we had cutting edge to go in behind them.

"We scored four goals, kept a clean sheet, it’s difficult to pick a negative out of it. It's fantastic to kick the new year off with a good result and it’s something to build on for the summer.

"I think its arguably as well as we’ve played, certainly for 45 minutes. We’ve had better results against stronger teams maybe over the years, but certainly the way we grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck, it was four nil, it could have been certainly more than that, absolutely delighted, I wish I was back with the squad tomorrow for another game at the weekend."

However, despite the nature of the triumph, the former Manchester City manager stressed that any hopes of success at Euro 2013 will hinge on what players are available to him.

He added: "It depends on what sort of players we have available to us, Germany, Holland, Italy, they're all going to come with their best players, we've got to come with our best players. If you don't you won't win

"I'm certainly buoyed up by tonight there’s no doubt about that, we've got players that are not in the squad tonight that are in the dressing room with us and that tells me something about the real spirit they have.

"Spirit takes you a long way and you couple that with the ability that they’ve shown tonight and we could have a chance."
