Alan Pardew believes Newcastle can win a trophy this season. That'll be tough but Adam Bate agrees they have enough to get past Atromitos in the Europa League on Thursday
The Greek side showed plenty to suggest they can be a handful and made a winning start to their league campaign away at Kerkyra on Sunday.
They will be taking this tie extremely seriously and are 10/1 (11.00) with Panbet to get the win at St James’ Park.
The winner will progress to the Europa League group stages and while Toon boss Alan Pardew admits qualification for the Champions League is the main target, a trophy is in his sights.
“Anybody who knows me and knows my management will tell you I am desperate to win something, and I think I have got a team that can potentially do that,” said Pardew.
Newcastle have an extra day to prepare for their weekend Premier League game than they did for the first leg so expect the manager to name a stronger line-up with the contest in the balance.
Although Cheick Tiote is injured, Newcastle have the squad to cope and are 1/3 (1.33) with Panbet to win the game. The draw is available at 22/5 (5.40).
Pardew will probably look to name something approaching his best side and hit the Greeks hard early on. With the home crowd behind them it would be no surprise if the Magpies take a lead into the interval.
They achieved that feat in the majority of their home games in the Premier League last season and are 81/100 (1.81) with Panbet to lead at the break. That’s a good bet in this one.
But before getting on that tip, consider the fact that Newcastle won the game on 11 of the 12 occasions they took the lead at home in the league last season.
As a result, the pick of the bets is to take the industry-best price of evens (2.00) with Panbet for Newcastle to lead at half-time and go on to win the match.
For the value bet, note that Atromitos may be forced to go for it late on and without Tiote destroying in
midfield Pardew could be forced into a more attacking line-up.
If, as expected, Atromitos are chasing the game after the break, there could be value in backing both teams to score in the second half – especially when it’s available at 13/4 (4.25) with Panbet.
