Aston Villa's poor start to this season’s NextGen Series continued as they fell to a 1-0 defeat against PSV Eindhoven in Holland on Wednesday night.

The young Villans, who reached the quarter-finals of last season’s competition, have now lost both of their opening games and are bottom of Group Four.

Villa made three changes to the side which against Sporting Lisbon, with Courtney Cameron and Samir Carruthers, who impressed last season, coming into the side.

Despite those changes, the Dutch side dominated possession in the opening half and took the lead thanks to a 34th-minute strike from Geraldo Antonio.

However, they were pushed back somewhat in the second as Villa went in search of a goal. Jack Grealish, Michael Drennan and Malcolm Melvin all had good opportunities for the Midlands side but were unable to beat Verstappen in the PSV goal.

7/1 Newcastle are 7/1 with William Hill to beat Aston Villa 2-1
Over in Group Two Juventus were making their debut in the NextGen series and needed a 94th minute strike from Edoardo Ceria to secure a point in a 3-3 draw with Fenerbahce.

Fenerbahce struggled in last season’s campaign finishing bottom of their group, so a point against the impressive might of Juventus will doubtless have pleased youth team manager Bilal Sur.

The opening 75 minutes were dominated by two men – Stefano Padovan for Juventus and Beykan Simsek for Fenerbahce. 18-year-old Italian striker Padovan put Juventus ahead on two occasions with goals in the 27th and 50th minutes, but midfielder Simsek fired his side level both times with a 38th minute strike and a 75th minute penalty.

With five minutes to play Fenerbahce thought they had snatched the victory when Alexander Sahat struck to put the Turkish side ahead for the first time in the match, however they were denied by Ceria's goal deep into injury time.
