thumbnail Hello,

The Spaniard played under the new Blaugrana coach earlier in his career and believes he is the perfect choice to take over from Pep Guardiola at Camp Nou

Swansea City defender Angel Rangel believes new Barcelona boss Tito Vilanova was the perfect choice to succeed Pep Guardiola in the Camp Nou hotseat.

The 42-year-old former assistant took over the reins in May after Guardiola decided to end his four-year spell in charge.

And Rangel, who played under Vilanova for lower league side Terrassa before joining the Swans in 2007, expects the new coach to settle in quickly to the new role.
"Everyone will see he is the right person to go into Barca,” Rangel told Wales Online.

“If they had brought someone like Jose Mourinho in there then he would have had to rip it up and start from scratch.

“The Barca players know him already. He knows the style of football they play and I don’t think he will try and change it. He is the ideal person to take over from Guardiola.

“Barcelona are the best team in the world so he won’t need to change much.He will probably make a few small changes to put his own style into it, but Barcelona will carry on being successful as the best passing side around.”

Despite winning a record 14 trophies, Guardiola surprisingly stepped down after admitting he was mentally fatigued by the job. But Rangel does not believe the pressure will get to Vilanova and backed him to be successful at Barcelona.

He said: “It’s a big job, one of the biggest in the world and he will be under a lot of pressure. But he has been waiting for a long time for this opportunity.

“He’s not the assistant any more, the spotlight will be on him and it won’t be easy – but he has a great deal of knowledge about the game.

“He is a big football man who has played for Barcelona, so he knows exactly what the club is all about.

“He was very humble, hard-working and respectful. You could speak honestly to him and he would do the same to you. That could be key to his success with Barca.”
