That's it from me, Harry Slavin. Thanks to all of you who contributed tonight and stayed for the duration. Remember to stay tuned to Goal tonight for coverage of the final between Spain and Brazil. That is not to be missed! Until next time though, it's goodbye from me!
FT: URUGUAY 2-2 ITALY ( ITALY WIN 3-2 ON PENALTIES) The Azzurri gain redemption of sorts after their semi final defeat on penalties as they hold their nerve in the shootout.
Forlan is up first for Uruguay...
The teams are huddled round nervously as they decide the order of takers. The captains meet in the centre circle for the third and final time.

FULL-TIME ET: URUGUAY 2-2 ITALY. Penalties it is then! Uruguay cannot break down ten-man Italy and so they'll have to find a way past Buffon from 12-yards if they want to secure third place.
Walter Gargano has a powerful effort blocked by Buffon and Cavani is offside as he follows up. It looks like we are going to penalties.
Forlan's cross takes a deflection off Maggio and Uruguay have a corner. Any chance goes begging though as Forlan catches his compatriots out with a quickly taken corner that goes to waste.
The Italian penalties in the semi final were flawless - bar one. The Azzurri will be more than happy if they can take it to a shootout now.
All Italy players are back inside their own half. Cavani has another half chance but his toe poke clears the bar from the edge of the area.
SUAREZ!! The Liverpool forward gets hold of a shot that looks to be troubling Buffon. Unfortunately for Uruguay the shot keeps on rising and ends up sailing over the bar.
Italy are straight into defensive mode after that sending off. They've already resorted to time wasting and are sitting deeper than ever. Who can blame them!
The free kick is virtually from the same position that Cavani equalised. This time he gets it all wrong and the shot goes sailing over Buffon's crossbar.
SENDING OFF!! Montolivo clips Suarez as he runs towards goal. The referee reaches for his pocket to provide the Milan man with his second booking. Italy are down to ten men. To make matters worse, Cavani is standing over the free kick.
Antonio Candreva lines up a shot from distance that skims wide of Muslera's goal.
Uruguay ,make their final change as Diego Perez of Bologna comes on for Rios. Both sides have now used all their subs.
We're back underway for the final time in Salvador. Tense times now for both sides.
105' + 1'
That's it for the first period of extra time. Just 15 minutes remaining now for either side to find a winner. Who's going to be the hero? Or the villain?
Italy string a few passes together for what seems like the first time in the entire match. It all comes to and end when El Shaarawy's flick is cut out by Godin and the South Americans clear.
Chance for Cavani! The Napoli man looks to be in on goal but a tired first touch and then a decent block from Bonucci denies the Uruguayan a clear shooting opportunity.
There is contact from Chiellini but it's minimal and you have to say Suarez was looking for the penalty. Right call.
Alvaro Pereira slips in Suarez who looks to be through on goal. He takes an extra touch instead of the shot and ends up falling theatrically under a challenge. The referee points immediately for a goal kick, ignoring Suarez's pleas.
Diego Godin is down inside the Italy area and Uruguay want a penalty for Aquilani's clumsy challenge. Nothing is doing though for the Algerian referee and we play on.
I wonder if Bonucci fancies another crack at a penalty if this goes down to the wire? Something tells me he may just be the last on the list this time around.
Astori is having to make way for Italy having failed to recover from cramp. Leonardo Bonucci comes on in his place.
The fans have on the whole stuck around for the additional periods. I don't think anybody in their right mind would be leaving at this stage now.
Here we go again then. 30 minutes to decide who claims the third place in this years Confederations Cup. Either that or the dreaded penalty shootout.
90' + 4'
Cesare Prandelli is going round his players individually to prepare them for extra time. Uruguyan coach Oscar Tabarez meanwhile looks to have gone for the team speech approach. Which will have the desired affect in Salvador?
90' + 3'
FULL-TIME: URUGUAY 2-2 ITALY. The second half has created something of a spectacle as both sides produced quality strikes to send this one into extra time. Not many out their will have wanted this, there's a lot of treatment being dished out as the teams await the start of the additional periods.. At the same time, neither side will want to lose now.
90' + 2'
Antonio Candreva swings it in, but it sails beyond everyone and goes straight out of play. A complete waste for the last chance of the 90 minutes.
90' + 2'
El Shaarawy chases a long ball downfield and is upended by Caceres on the left-hand side of the area. One last chance for Italy, and it's a big one.
Play is held up as Italy's first goalscorer Davide Astori is down and is treated with cramp. He's back on his feet now and we go into three minutes of added time.
Cavani, of course, is on a hat-trick now. What an end to his Confederations Cup it would be if he could complete it.
Less than five minute then for one of these sides to steal victory before the are forced into extra time. It's been a pretty memorable encounter for a third place play-off.
Subsititutions flying around now. Italy's free kick hero Diamanti is off for Giaccherini. Uruguay replace Maxi Pereira for Alvaro Pereira. No relation.
Yellow CardRiccardo Montolivo
Maggio goes close with a glancing header from a corner to restoring Italy's lead but he can't direct his effort goalwards. Meanwhile, Montolivo is the latest player in the book.
A lot of you suggested that Cavani needed a big performance today to justify all the hype surrounding him this summer. Consider yourselves convinced. The Napoli man's second half display has been majestic.
GOOOAAALLL!!!! CAVANI WITH A SECOND!!! Oh wow. This is special. Diamanti's free kick was good but this effort has just blown it out of the water. Cavani thumps a ferocious free kick that whizzes past the wall and soars past Buffon. Incredible strike.
Now Uruguay have a free kick central, in front of goal. Cavani fancies this one.
That was Diamanti's first every strike for the Azzurri. If he thought he have broken his duck earlier, he definitely has now.
GOOOAAALLL!!! DIAMANTI WITH A SUPERB FREE KICK!!! Andrea who? Alessandro Diamanti steps up and curls a magnificent effort over the wall and into the corner. It was every bit as good as a Pirlo special. Italy are back in front.
Stephan El Shaarawy is felled just outside the box and Italy have a free kick in a fantastic position. Where's Andrea Pirlo when you need him?
Italy have made a change as De Rossi makes way for Aquilani. De Rosisi had an impressive opening half but hasn't turned up for the second.
Daniele De Rossi
There has been a huge momentum shift in this game since the South American's equalised. Italy are struggling to create anything going forward and Uruguay are looking stronger by the minute.
FANTASTIC DOUBLE STOP FROM BUFFON! De Rossi makes an awful mistake in midfield as he lets the ball run through to a blue Uruguayan jersey. Forlan is then slipped through and is denied by Buffon's hands first before he gets back to his feet to deny the same player with his feet. Uruguay should be in front.
Suarez is just beginning to see more of the ball as Uruguay are beginning to take the upper hand in this third place play-off.
A few more of you have been in touch. @Dammyswagkid reckons Italy are rather short on fire power this afternoon. "Really missing Balotelli in this game!". They definitely have lacked a presence in the final third this evening.
Yellow CardLuis Suárez
Suarez catches Astori and the South American is booked. Needless from the Liverpool man. Uruguay will hope that there are no repercussions from this silly booking later in the match.
I was about to ramble on about the lack of attacking threat in this second half before Cavani slotted home. Uruguay are looking a little more lively now.
GOOOAAALLLL!!! CAVANI SLOTS HOME THE EQUALISER!!! Well that goes someway to justifying the price tag. Walter Gargano drives through the middle of the Italian half before playing a clever disguised pass through fro the Napoli man who shows terrific composure to slip the ball beyond Buffon.
Suarez does take it this time but it's a complete anti-climax as the ball crashes straight into the wall.
Yellow CardGiorgio Chiellini
Now here's a chance. Girgio Chiellini hauls down Suarez a few metres outside the area. He gets a booking for his troubles and Suarez now has a chance to reenact his heroics against Spain.
A little bit of history in today's game as FIFA officially use goal-line technology to decipher the Italy goalscorer. It has now gone to Davide Astori and rightfully so.
Cristian Rodriguez is keen to get the Uruguayan push back underway but he's scuppered by an overzealous ball-boy who throws another ball onto the pitch. It seems to be a common occurrence at this years Confederations Cup. They might want to get them trained for the main event in a year's time.
A reminder that I want to hear from you guys throughout the action. Any opinions or predictions, get them into me via twitter, @harryslavin.
Italy are out nice a prompt. They have to wait a couple of minutes for the South Americans but they're now out and we're now back up and running.
There are quite a few players in the shop window this afternoon, including Suarez. Many feel Cavani still has a point to prove, and with rumours that Roma are now willing to listen to offers for De Rossi, who will shine in the second half?
A few of you are still getting in touch via twitter. @fireflies001 thinks Italy need to be wary of giving away any more free kicks around the area. "We might be in for more free kick drama with Suarez and Forlan in this one." Suarez has already shown he can take a free kick this tournament. I think I wasn't the only one a bit surprised to see Forlan step up earlier in the first half.
Still the debate rages on about who got Italy's opener. FIFA reckon it's Diamanti's - the man who swung in the free kick. On the replays though, I'd argue Astori got a touch before the whole ball had crossed the line. It's a close call though.
HALF-TIME: URUGUAY 0-1 ITALY. Thankfully, it hasn't quite been the snooze-fest that some of us feared. Both sides have emerged with attacking intent, although it's only through a healthy slice of good fortune that Italy have the lead.
45' + 1'
Riccardo Montolivo has just pulled off a very important interception right on half time. It looked as though Forlan had just sent Suarez clear but the Milan midfielder lunged to cut it out and the chance is snuffed out.
Just the two minutes added time at the end of the half. Can Uruguay find an equaliser before the break?
Uruguay are looking to shoot on sight but it hasn't worked for them so far. The build up play between the front three has fizzled out after a promising start and the Italians are good value for their lead.
Big shout for a penalty from the Uruguayan forwards as Chiellini makes a hash of a clearance and sees the ball come up and hit him on the arm. The Algerian referee isn't interested though.
El Shaarawy capitalizes on a slip from Caceres and is through on goal. His shot slips past Muslera but a Uruguayan defender makes it back to clear the effort. I'm not sure it was on target in any case but some good defensive covering from the South Americans.
Maxi Pereira with a chance! The Benfica defender is picked out brilliantly by Cavani who lofts a clipped ball through. Pereira gets his shot away on the turn but Buffon is down once more to keep it out.
Cavani and Forlan try and force the issue for Uruguay but without any success. Cavani thinks he can get a shot away but his thwarted by Astori. Moments later an effort from Forlan bobbles its way through to Buffon.
Stephan El Shaarawy has been very quiet this afternoon but we finally catch a glimpse of the Milan youngster. He picks up the ball on the edge of the Uruguayan area and let's fly, only to see Muslera beat away the shot. A decent effort, but no more.
CAVANI HAS THE BALL IN THE NET!! But it won't count. The Napoli forward finishes from Forlan's cross expertly but unfortunately for Uruguay, it was from an offside position.
Caceres is back on and in even better news for the South Americans, they have a free kick inside the Italy half.
Uruguay are currently down to ten-men as Martin Caceres has to go off with a head injury. There appears to be a bit of blood as well for the Juventus full-back. Nasty.
Uruguay are looking for a quick response and they almost have one through Suarez. The want-away striker times his run into the area perfectly and Buffon has to be alert to beat away the first time effort at the near post.
Utter confusion has descended as to the goalscorer for Italy. It could any one of Muslera, Diamanti or Astori. Take your pick. Personally, my money is on Astori.
GOOAAAALLL!!! ITALY LEAD!! What a bizarre goal that is! Diamanti's free kick comes back off the angle of the goal. It then hits a hapless Muslera on the back and creeps towards goal where a lurking Astori is there to make sure the ball finds the back of the net.
Candreva's corner is punched clear but Diamanti is fouled on the edge of the area and Italy have a free kick in an advanced position.
Antonio Candreva picks up the ball and fires over the bar. His decision making is a bit better moments later though as he feeds De Sciglio, who wins a corner for Cesare Prandelli's side.
More chat from you lot. @ItsAhsann is expecting big things from Cavani this afternoon, saying "Today is the day Cavani has to show he's worth the 63 million euro price tag." He certainly hasn't shown that kind of worth so far in Brazil has he?
Diamanti lines up an ambitious effort from a long way out. He doesn't connect with it at all though and the ball rolls harmlessly wide of Muslera's goal. Italy are still to really get going.
Good move from the Italians sets up their first efforts on target. Daniele De Rossi's defence splitting pass finds De Sciglio in a wide position. His low cross finds Antonio Candreva on the edge of the box but he scuffs his shot and doesn't really trouble Muslera.
The crowd may be sparse but they're creating a bit of noise and most of it is in support for their fellow South Americans.
It isn't Suarez and it isn't a goal. Forlan takes command of the set piece and ushers away Suarez before firing a low free kick at goal. It squirms past the wall but Buffon is down well in the Italy goal to stop the effort.
More good link up play from Uruguay sees Cavani bundled over by Davide Astori. This is well within striking range for Suarez.
Dangerous delivery from Alessandro Diamanti! The ex-West Ham man swings in a fizzing cross and Giorgio Chiellini sends a glancing header just wide.
Yellow CardMaxi Pereira
First booking goes to Maxi Pereira as he hacks down Mattia De Sciglio. It gives the Azzurri a free kick in a promising position here.
Uruguay are certainly looking the sharper already. A neat exchange between Luis Suarez and Cavani sees the Liverpool striker played in but his cross can't find either Forlan or Cavani.
The half-full stadium is treated to its first meaningful action. Diego Forlan is picked out in the Italian box but his dangerous ball across goal isn't read by Edinson Cavani and the chance goes begging.
Not the best of turnouts at the Arena Fonte Nova as @3fo_Kobla_ points out on twitter. " It looks as if evereybody has run away to Rio to catch the Brazil-Spain game." To be honest, I don't blame them.
Diamanti and Gilardino get the ball rolling in Brazil. The weather is glorious. Let's hope the football can match it.
The teams are out in a sunny Salvador. Italy are about to get us underway.
Uruguay have the upper hand in head to heads between the two countries. Have they got the upper hand going into this one? Let me know your predictions and opinions for tonight's action by using the chat box in the match centre. Or, alternatively, you can get in touch via twitter, by tweeting to @harryslavin.
URUGUAY: (4-3-3) Muslera; Lugano, Godin, Pereira, Gargano; Carceres, Rodriguez, Arevalo; Suarez, Forlan, Cavani.
ITALY: (4-3-2-1) Buffon; Maggio, Astori, Chiellini, De Sciglio; Candreva, Montolivo, De Rossi; El Shaarawy, Diamanti; Gilardino.
We're only ten minutes from kick off so let's get you lot some team news up, shall we?
The last time these two sides met was back in 2011. Uruguay won out in Rome that evening thanks to a goal from Sebastian Fernandez. Hopefully tonight's proceedings won't be as low key.
Uruguay missed a penalty as they were defeated by a late Paulinho header as Brazil claimed their place in the final. Italy came even closer as they took World Champions Spain all the way to penalties, only for Bonucci to turn villain as he skied his penalty in sudden death.
This is the game that nobody wants to a part of. A further reminder of how close yet how far you were from success. Both Italy and Uruguay came mightily close to reaching this years final. Can the players lift themselves from their semi final disappointment and deliver a classic today?
Good evening and a warm welcome to Goal's coverage of the 3rd/4th play-off match from this years Confederations Cup. I'm Harry Slavin and I'll be here to take you through all of the action as Italy and Uruguay battle it out in Salvador.
