Tottenham Hotspur won 8 - 7 on penalties

Live Commentary

  • So there we have it, Tottenham just about scrape through to the quarter finals of the Capital One Cup after an 8-7 victory in the penalty shoot-out! Friedel was the hero in the end, saving from Elmohamady, but in truth Hull should have really killed the game off in extra time just before Kane's equaliser - Gedo firing off target with a brilliant chance on the break. It was far from a vintage display from Spurs, and I'm sure Villas-Boas will have plenty to say to his players in the dressing room, but still - a win's a win.
  • MISS! Elmohamady's tame shot is saved brilliantly by the considerable legs of Friedel! Spurs are through to the next round!
  • GOAL! Walker finds the corner and makes it 8-7!
  • GOAL! McShane fires it in off the bar! 7-7!
  • GOAL! Dembele sends Jakupovic the wrong way to make it 7-6!
  • GOAL! Rosenior beats Friedel with a decent penalty. 6-6 now!
  • GOAL! Big Kaboul sends the keeper the wrong way and makes it 6-5 to Spurs!
  • GOAL! Meyler also calmly rolls the ball into the corner. 5-5!
  • GOAL! Paulinho slots it into the corner and it's now 5-4!
  • GOAL! Proschwitz keeps his cool and makes it 4-4! It's now sudden death.
  • GOAL! Kane puts Spurs back in front with a powerful strike down the middle. 4-3.
  • GOAL! Gedo levels it back up with a neat penalty into the corner. It's now 3-3.
  • MISS! Jakupovic saves Lamela's poor penalty! 3-2 still.
  • GOAL! Boyd also slots his penalty home. It's now 3-2.
  • GOAL! Vertonghen calmly slots his penalty home, sending Jakupovic the wrong way.
  • GOAL! Quinn fires it down the middle and into the roof of the net. 2-1 to Spurs.
  • GOAL! Defoe finds the corner and makes it 2-0 to Tottenham!
  • MISS! Friedel saves from McLean and it stays 1-0 to Tottenham!
  • GOAL! Sigurdsson fires the first penalty into the corner. 1-0 to Spurs.
  • 120' + 2'
    And we're going to a penalty shoot-out!
  • 120' + 1'
CHANCE! Sigurdsson flashes a first-time snap shot wide of the post!
  • 120'
One minute added on at White Hart Lane.
  • 119'
Paulinho is the next Spurs player to fire an effort off-target. I think some shooting practice may be in order later this week.
  • 118'
Walker flies down the right flank but passes the ball straight to a Hull player. Spurs will need to do better than that if they want to avoid a penalty shoot-out.
  • 117'
Lamela's delivery is flicked on by Kane but it comes back out to the attacker. He then passes to Walker who shoots himself this time, but can only find row Z of White Hart Lane.
  • 116'
It's headed out to Walker who finds Kaboul on the right flank - he then wins another corner ...
  • 115'
Corner to Spurs after Defoe's strike is deflected behind by McShane ...
  • 113'
Defoe drags a poor effort wide of the post from outside the box. He wants a corner, but the referee says no.
  • 111'
And so it looks like we're heading for penalties at White Hart Lane - unless there's more late drama of course.
  • 109'
Defoe is close to making it 3-2 but his strike from inside the Hull penalty box is narrowly wide.
  • 108'
    Goal Harry Kane
GOAL! SPURS ARE LEVEL! Hull may well rue that missed chance as Kane strikes to make it 2-2! The young Tottenham forward beats Jakupovic with a well-placed left-footed effort from outside the box!
  • 107'
Kaboul heads over from the far post after a cross from the right, before Gedo wastes a BRILLIANT chance to put the tie beyond doubt, lashing his strike over the bar as he races through on goal.
  • 106'
And we're back underway at White Hart Lane, Tottenham with 15 minutes to get back in this Capital One Cup tie.
  • 105' + 1'
And it's half-time in extra time - stay tuned for a quick turnaround.
  • 105'
Lamela looks for Paulinho but the Brazilian slips at the crucial moment and the Spurs attack falters. Things just aren't going their way at the moment.
  • 103'
Walker bursts forward and unleashes a strike at goal but his opposite number Rosenior gets in the way of the shot.
  • 101'
Meyler concedes a free-kick in a decent position but makes up for it by blocking Kane's effort, after the striker receives the ball from the short set-piece.
  • 99'
    Goal Paul McShane
GOOOAAAL! Hull go mad as McShane puts the visitors in front at White Hart Lane, nodding past Friedel from a corner! The defender loses his man before thumping the header past the helpless keeper!
  • 96'
Sigurdsson then comes forward for Spurs but is off-target with a long-range shot from outside the penalty area.
  • 94'
Hull have started well and break with a three on two. They win a corner from which Boyd sends a right-footed effort wide of the goal.
  • 91'
And we're back underway, now in extra time.
  • 90' + 5'
And that's the end of normal time - we'll now have 30 minutes of extra time at White Hart Lane. Hull got slightly fortunate with their equaliser - Friedel deflecting home an off-target effort from Davies - but credit must go to them for stopping Spurs from playing, and also for taking the game to the hosts at times in that second 45 minutes. However, you also have to feel for Tottenham and in particular Kane, who went SO close to a fantastic late winner right at the death.
  • 90' + 4'
POST!!! SO CLOSE KANE! The Tottenham youngster is inches away from a peach of a late winner, beating Jakupovic with a fantastic drive from range but failing to beat the woodwork. So, so unlucky!
  • 90' + 3'
Walker then crosses from the right but Jakupovic beats it away from Kane.
  • 90' + 2'
Chiriches cleans up after some dodgy defending by Kaboul - Defoe then breaks for Tottenham but can't find a team-mate with his cross.
  • 90'
There'll be a minimum of four added minutes for someone to save us from extra time.
  • 88'
Now it's Spurs' turn to push on for a late winner as Kane nearly breaks into space in the Hull area, but is denied at the last.
  • 86'
Spurs scramble the initial delivery clear but Hull get back on the ball. The visitors are just pinning the hosts back, here.
  • 85'
Kane fouls McShane deep in the Spurs half, but out wide, and Hull have a free-kick in a dangerous position.
  • 83'
GOAL! No, it's been disallowed! Kane has the ball in the back of the net but Defoe is penalised for handball in the build-up, bringing it down with his arm before threading his team-mate through with a neat back-heel.
  • 81'
    SubstitutionRobert Koren Gedo
  • 81'
Sigurdsson delivers a corner from the left but Meyler is on hand to head the ball clear for Hull.
  • 79'
SAVE! Lamela fires it at goal but Jakupovic dives to his left to make the stop! It was a fairly easy height for the keeper, to be honest.
  • 78'
    SubstitutionNacer Chadli Harry Kane
  • 78'
Defoe tumbles on the edge of the Hull box again and, this time, does indeed win a free-kick after Meyler bundled him over.
  • 76'
    Yellow Card Jermain Defoe
Defoe picks up a yellow card for simulation after falling under pressure from Davies just outside the Hull penalty box. That looked dubious to me.
  • 74'
The two sides have got just over 15 minutes left to find a winner, with neither side too excited about the prospect of extra time, I'd imagine.
  • 72'
Chiriches gets back to halt Koren deep on Hull's right, He would have been in there - Spurs need to be careful not to get caught on the break.
  • 70'
It's like pinball in the Hull penalty area as Spurs try three too many passes in their latest attack, Chadli, Defoe and Paulinho all deciding not to shoot or failing to find the space to do so.
  • 68'
    SubstitutionKyle Naughton Vlad Iulian Chiricheş
  • 68'
    SubstitutionChristian Eriksen Nacer Chadli
  • 68'
Boyd delivers the corner but Proschwitz heads it harmlessly off-target.
  • 67'
Spurs get forward in numbers once more but, yet again, fail to find the decisive final ball. Kaboul then heads behind from underneath his own crossbar after a dangerous Elmohamady cross from the Hull right.
  • 65'
Sigurdsson tries to play Defoe in behind but can't quite find the right ball - it's just not happening for Spurs at the moment, but they are enjoying the better share of possession once more.
  • 63'
Lamela and Paulinho try a delicious one-two but the former's return ball is too heavy and Jakupovic collects it.
  • 61'
McLean is just down and receiving some treatment after a nasty late challenge by Paulinho.
  • 59'
Back come Spurs with Lamela, Defoe and Eriksen all flooding forward. The ball breaks to Paulinho on the right but his cross is poor and goes straight behind.
  • 56'
Hull look to push on as Davies and McLean both send headers at goal. It has been a loud night at White Hart Lane but it's gone a bit quiet now.
  • 53'
    Own Goal Brad Friedel
GOAL! Hull level things up and it will go down as a Friedel own goal after he turns in Davies' close-range shot. The defender tries to knock in Elmohamady's low, driven cross but his effort - from all of a yard out - is going well wide. However, the American keeper SOMEHOW then deflects the ball into his own net. What a bizarre goal!
  • 53'
Walker pings a cross in from the right but it evades everyone and falls to Naughton on the opposite flank. He then finds Defoe but the striker sends a shot well wide.
  • 51'
Quinn plays an awkward pass back to Jakupovic in the Hull goal, but he deals with it well before clearing the ball.
  • 49'
Sigurdsson tries to work a shooting opportunity on the edge of the penalty box - with the White Hart Lane crowd egging him on after his beautiful opener - but he can't quite find the space and the move fizzles out.
  • 48'
And the game settles back into its former pattern; Spurs leisurely knocking the ball around their defence and midfield.
  • 46'
    SubstitutionDanny Graham Aaron Mclean
  • 46'
We're back underway at White Hart Lane, with McLean shooting just wide for Hull with the first move of the half.
  • The difference in the two sides in that first half can be summed up by this statistic; Tottenham have made a total of 444 passes, with an accuracy of 91%, while Hull have made just 169 with an accuracy of just 76%. The visitors NEED to keep it better.
  • Villas-Boas' men have had a lot of the ball - 72% of it in fact - but have only managed four shots at goal with Hull defending robustly. The hosts look content at 1-0 to be honest but, at that scoreline, there's always the threat that their opponents will come back into the game. Let's therefore hope the home side go for it a bit more after the break.
  • And there goes the half-time whistle. Sigurdsson's fabulous strike is all that separates the two sides at White Hart Lane, the Iceland international beating Jakupovic with a superb drive from outside the box. Hull have offered very little in return, bar one Elmohamady shot that forced Friedel into a good stop, but Tottenham have also failed to go through the gears themselves.
  • 45'
Paulinho tries to get a shot away on the edge of the Hull box but the ball won't quite fall for him.
  • 43'
Elmohamady puts a dangerous low ball into the Spurs box but Vertonghen lashes it away at the near post.
  • 41'
Walker is lucky to escape a booking after a very rash challenge on Quinn. Bruce does not look too happy about that one.
  • 39'
Hull are now doing a better job of pressing Spurs further up the pitch, and are thus forcing them into a few mistakes and seeing a bit more of the ball.
  • 37'
McShane gets into some space in the Spurs box following the corner, but heads the chance over the bar.
  • 35'
SAVE! Friedel gets down low to save from Elmohamady before Kaboul reacts quickly to stop Graham from getting to the rebound!
  • 34'
    SubstitutionAlex Bruce Nick Proschwitz
  • 32'
Koren has got a few decent balls in from the right in the past couple of minutes, but no-one in a Hull jersey has been there to get on the end of them.
  • 30'
Hull's Bruce - the player, not the manager - is down and receiving treatment after what looks like some muscle trouble.
  • 28'
Walker bursts down the right flank but can only find a Hull player with the low cross.
  • 26'
Defoe is nearly played in behind the Hull defence but can't quite collect the ball with his first touch and the attack breaks down.
  • 24'
Finally Hull get the ball back but, predictably, are unable to keep it for long as they send an ambitious pass out for a goal kick.
  • 22'
This is getting silly, Tottenham have kept the ball for around five minutes and have enjoyed 79% possession thus far.
  • 20'
Still Spurs have the ball as they knock it around the midfield and wait patiently for an opening.
  • 18'
Spurs have had all the ball since the goal, with Hull completely pinned back in their own half. It's already hard to see the Tigers getting back into this.
  • 16'
    Goal Gylfi Sigurdsson
GOAL! Sigurdsson smashes the ball past a helpless Jakupovic to put Tottenham ahead! The ball sits up nicely for him after Naughton's pass, before the midfielder blasts it home with his right foot.
  • 14'
Eriksen sends a wild effort wide of the goal after getting the ball from a short corner.
  • 12'
Paulinho plays a lovely one-two with Eriksen but drags the shot wide of the goal. Spurs are just starting to look a bit more threatening, now.
  • 9'
Kaboul heads just wide from the resulting corner, beating two Hull defenders in the air to get the ball.
  • 8'
Paulinho looks for Defoe with a dangerous ball in behind but McShane is there to head it behind.
  • 6'
Graham flicks on a long free-kick for Hull but he puts too much on it and his team-mate Boyd can't quite get there.
  • 4'
Spurs charge forward with Eriksen and Defoe linking up well, but the visitors get plenty of men back and clear the ball. Down the other end Graham somehow misses from a few yards out, but is relived to see the offside flag already raised.
  • 3'
Hull are enjoying some good early possession at White Hart Lane, but are yet to create anything. The Tottenham fans, meanwhile, are in very good voice indeed. Villas- Boas will be a happy man.
  • 1'
    And we're off.
  • Kick-off now just moments away ...
  • Hull have only ever won once at White Hart Lane, beating Tottenham 1-0 in their first-ever Premier League season in 2008.
  • Tottenham have not lost a home Capital One Cup - or the previous equivalent - match in 90 minutes since a 3-1 loss to Birmingham City in October 2000, that's a run of 18 games.
  • We've got around five minutes until kick-off at White Hart Lane, so let's just bring you some pre-match stats ...
  • Now, hopefully we'll be entertained by what happens on the pitch tonight, but there's also sure to be interest in what happens in the stands following Villas-Boas' comments after the victory at the weekend. The Spurs boss said his side got "almost no support" from the fans during their 1-0 win - how will they respond this evening?
  • So, Tottenham make eight changes from that 1-0 win on Sunday, Jermain Defoe, Brad Friedel and Younes Kaboul among those who come in. Etienne Capoue is also on the bench after returning from an ankle injury that has kept him out since September 1. As for Hull, Steve Bruce makes four changes with Eldin Jakupovic, Robert Koren, Stephen Quinn and Danny Graham all starting.
  • Hull City starting XI: Jakupovic, Rosenior, Bruce, Davies, Meyler, Graham, Koren, McShane, Boyd, Elmohamady, Quinn. Subs: Harper, Figueroa, Gedo, Sagbo, McLean, Faye, Proschwitz.
  • Tottenham starting XI: Friedel; Walker, Kaboul, Vertonghen, Naughton; Paulinho, Dembele; Lamela, Sigurdsson, Eriksen; Defoe. Subs: Chiriches, Holtby, Capoue, Chadli, Lloris, Kane, Bentaleb.
  • Andre Villas-Boas' men claimed victory in that clash thanks to a late - and controversial - Roberto Soldado penalty, but in truth it was a rather disappointing spectacle. Let's hope for a better clash tonight, we'll have the teams news for you in a moment.
  • Hello and welcome to play-by-play text coverage of this evening's Capital One Cup fourth round tie between Tottenham and Hull. The two teams come up against each other for the second time in just a matter of days, after Spurs' 1-0 win in the Premier League on Sunday, but will we see a repeat of the outcome?
