The Singapore side will be looking to close the league campaign in style in their final match of the seasonThe Malaysian Super League Championship has been clinched by Kelantan, and the runners-up spot has been assured for LionsXII, but the celebrations are still planned at the Jalan Besar Stadium on Saturday night.
The LionsXII will be taking on Johor FC in the final match of the league campaign at a later kick-off time of 845pm to accommodate the pre-match festivities which will include a curtain-raiser match between Singapore Veterans and a Celebrity Team.
While the Lions may not have anything left to play for, their Malaysian opponents will be looking to strengthen their hold on a mid-table finish. The top 10 teams will qualify for the prestigious Malaysia Cup and with Johor sitting in 8th position, the likes of Sarawak, Felda United and PKNS are only a win away from usurping the one-time relegation contenders.
A recent upswing in fortunes after a disastrous couple of months, means Johor have managed to steer clear of the bottom three and stave off relegation for another year. Nothing less than a win in Singapore will do if they are to continue their good form.
LionsXII meanwhile, could still be without key personnel who missed out the mid-week defeat to T-Team. National servicemen, Hariss Harun, Safuwan Bahruddin and injured captain Shahril Ishak are doubts for the match.
Coach V.Sundramoorthy and his players have both signalled that their thoughts are already on a good Malaysia Cup campaign. There may not be a lot to play for except pride, but the match on Saturday night is sure to be a heated one with neither team in a position to lose.
