LionsXII seek away joy against Sarawak

LionsXII seek away joy against Sarawak

Alfie Lee / FAS

Having fallen to a disappointing home defeat last time out against Kelantan FA, Fandi Ahmad's men will hope to get a better result on the road

It looked like the LionsXII would build on a dominant first-half showing against Kelantan FA last Saturday, where Khairul Amri had given them the lead.

But a poor showing after the break saw them fall to a shock 2-1 loss at the Jalan Besar Stadium, with the visitors pouncing on two defensive lapses to seal a comeback victory late on through Francis Forkey Doe.

Now, Fandi Ahmad will take his men to Kuching and hope to fare better against Sarawak FA, when they resume Malaysia Super League action after a week.

A win would see the LionsXII climb above their fifth-placed opponents, who are ahead by one point after six games. Robert Alberts's charges also enter this match on the back of a defeat, having gone down 2-0 away to T-Team a week ago.

They have, howeever, won their last two league games at home and will not be an easy prospect to face. Serbian attacker Milorad Janjus has accounted for half of their six-goal tally in the league and will be the key threat. Hungarian centre-back Gabor Gyepes has weighed in with two and will be a danger from set-pieces, while midfielder and captain Joseph Kalang Tie is an important cog in their offensive strategy.

New signing Ryan Griffiths could also be set to make his debut, having moved from Adelaide United four days ago.

The LionsXII will look to Amri, who celebrated his birthday on Thursday, to continue his scoring form. With four goals so far, the striker is second on the top scorers list and can be clinical when presented with the chance to score.

Gabriel Quak's bright performance could see him retain his place, while Faris Ramli should also start if he recovers sufficiently from a knock. Fandi has previously stated that many other members of his side are carrying injuries of some sort as well, and he will count on their fighting spirit and determination to bounce back here.
