LionsXII face PKNS in penultimate away game

LionsXII face PKNS in penultimate away game

FAS

The defending Malaysia Super League champions have won only once in their last six games and will be keen to get back to winning ways, with only three league matches left

The LionsXII play their third game in seven days when they travel to Shah Alam to take on PKNS FC on Tuesday night, as they seek to put an end to some poor recent form.

A 0-0 draw against Sarawak FA on Saturday night meant that Fandi Ahmad's men have won just once in their last six games, with four of those being defeats. The disappointing results mean they languish in eighth with three more games to go, their title chances long gone, although they could still yet finish in the top six.

But their priority will be to secure a top-10 place, as Fandi stated after the Crocs game, to avoid being drawn into the play-offs for the Malaysia Cup. Three more points should be enough to see them do just that and Fandi will be keen for the LionsXII to take victory against the Malaysia Super League's cellar-dwellers.

Safuwan Baharudin is set to feature again for the LionsXII after making his return from injury against Sarawak, while captain Isa Halim could be in line for a start. While Fandi experimented with a fluid trio of Nazrul Nazari, Faris Ramli and Gabriel Quak behind lone striker Khairul Amri, it remains to be seen whether he will persist with the same tactic again.

However, it is clear that the LionsXII have the ability to create chances, but that they just have not been putting them away. Against Sarawak, the hosts carved out more opportunities and Fandi will hope they are not as wasteful when presented with the same against PKNS.

As for the Red Ants, they have a dismal home record with two victories out of nine games. In fact, they have notched just three wins in 19 matches, with their last one stretching back to March 14 - a 3-1 win over T-Team FC.

Since then, PKNS have embarked on a 12-game winless streak in the league, with three of those being draws. They come into this clash on the back of a six-game losing run and the LionsXII will be the heavy favourites here.

Captain Fauzan Dzulkifli will try to make things happen for the hosts, along with forwards Patrick Wleh and Karlo Primorac, against a LionsXII side whose morale may not exactly be sky-high. A draw would likely be regarded as a good result for PKNS, while the visitors should expect to come away with the three points.
