Live Commentary

  • So, Southampton's unbeaten start to the season comes to an end and they will look to bounce back to winning ways after the international break when they host West Ham. Norwich will seek for a second consecutive win when they travel to Tottenham. Thanks for joining me, Max Bentley, on this live commentary. Until next time, goodbye.
  • Nathan Redmond will no doubt steal the headlines in tomorrow's papers but Leroy Fer was the man of the match for me. Great performance from the Dutch midfielder who was the shining star in the middle of the park.
  • FT: Norwich 1-0 Southampton. Nathan Redmond is the matchwinner after scoring from a super solo effort. Adam Lallana went close to opening the scoring for Southampton in the first half when his volley cannonned back off the post, but on the balance of play, you feel that Norwich were the better side and deserved their first league win of the new season.
  • 90' + 4'
With Southampton pouring numbers forward, there is a chance for a Norwich break. However, Redmond puts too much pace on his through ball for Howson and a chance to wrap up the points breaks down. Seconds remaining.
  • 90' + 3'
NORWICH SHOULD HAVE A PENALTY! The home fans are furious when Snodgrass goes down in the box after being shoved to the floor by Fonte. How Howard Webb has not given a penalty there, I'll never know.
  • 90' + 2'
Into four minutes of stoppage time at Carrow Road and the crowd roar when Fer wins a free kick after being fouled by Wanyama. The Dutch summer signing been mightily impressive for Norwich today.
  • 90'
Southampton are looking to launch the ball into the penalty area but there are heaps of yellow shirts back to head the ball to safety. In truth, Ruddy has hardly been tested today.
  • 88'
Southampton win a free kick 30 yards from goal and Lambert steps up, only to see his fierce shot go straight into the wall. Disappointing.
  • 86'
NORWICH GO CLOSE! Redmond nearly doubles his tally and wraps up the points when he surges past Fonte on the left corner of the box before his low shot is well pushed away by Boruc.
  • 84'
Don't rule Southampton out just yet though. They have indeed been late-goal experts so far this term. Lambert scored a 90th-minute winner against West Brom on the opening day before Ward-Prowse's late equaliser against Sunderland last weekend. Will we see late drama here?
  • 82'
Southampton deliver a corner into the Norwich box and when it comes back out to the edge of the area, Davis slices the ball well wide of the target. Time running out for Pochettino's men.
  • 80'
Jay Rodriguez nearly makes an instant impact when he gets in between Bassong and Turner to meet Lambert's chipped pass. However, he can't quite get the ball under control and Ruddy races off his line to claim.
  • 78'
    SubstitutionD. Osvaldo Jay Rodriguez
Third and final change for Southampton here as Daniel Pablo Osvaldo's first start is brought to an end and he is replaced by Jay Rodriguez. Can someone step up for the Saints to help them preserve their unbeaten start to the beginning of the season?
  • 76'
    SubstitutionJohan Elmander Jonny Howson
Chris Hughton looks to hang onto the three points by replacing Johan Elmander with the more defensive-minded Jonny Howson. Good runout from the Swede on his home league debut.
  • 74'
Norwich are looking for a second here and Whittaker lays the ball off for Johnson outside the box, but his well-struck effort is blocked by Ward-Prowse. Southampton have hardly mustered a response since going behind.
  • 72'
    SubstitutionMorgan Schneiderlin Steven Davis
Second change for Southampton as Northern Ireland captain Steven Davis replaces Morgan Schneiderlin. He scored twice in Southampton's 5-1 win over Barnsley in midweek. Can he pop up with another goal today?
  • 70'
Norwich need to hold on for 20 minutes if they are to claim their first league win of the new season. At 19 years of age, Redmond looks set for a very bright future.
  • 68'
    Assist Leroy Fer
  • 68'
    Goal Nathan Redmond
REDMOND GIVES NORWICH THE LEAD! He's been the brightest attacker on the pitch and he gives the home fans something to cheer for, cutting inside from the left, past the challenges of Chambers and Ward-Prowse, before firing a low shot just inside the post. 1-0!
  • 67'
The search for a goal continues and Lambert goes close when he latches onto a long ball over the top before stinging the palms of Ruddy. It wouldn't have counted though as the offside flag was raised. Never offside in a million years.
  • 66'
Dejan Lovren produces a Lionel Messi-esque dribble through the Norwich half, selling a few players with some nutmegs. He bulldozes his way into the box before Whittaker nips the ball off his twinkle-toed boots at the last moment.
  • 64'
Snodgrass is beginning to cause Fox more problems down the right and he cuts inside once again, looking to pull the trigger. However, Schneiderlin tracks back brilliantly to steal the ball away.
  • 62'
    SubstitutionAdam Lallana G. Ramírez
First substitution of the game as Adam Lallana is replaced by Gaston Ramirez. Strange decision from Pochettino as the captain has looked more likely to break down the Norwich defence than anyone. Ricky Lambert takes the armband.
  • 60'
The volume inside Carrow Road rises as Norwich look to come forward again. Snodgrass cuts inside from the right flank but his low drilled shot is well blocked by Fonte.
  • 58'
Redmond looks lively down the left and he takes on Chambers before delivering a cross into the box which is glanced narrowly wide by the head of Elmander. That left side is looking dangerous for Norwich.
  • 56'
It was billed as a tale of two Ricky's but neither has impressed so far today. With Osvaldo alongside him, Lambert has really struggled to make an impact on this game.
  • 54'
Redmond produces some neat footwork down the left before crossing into the middle. Boruc flaps at the cross and the ball falls to the feet of Snodgrass who miscontrols and the chance goes begging.
  • 52'
Wanyama concedes a needless foul and he is nearly made to pay when Fer nods Snodgrass' cross just past the post. Lively start to the second half.
  • 51'
Schneiderlin feeds the ball to the left corner of the box for Osvaldo and he gets an extra yard on Turner before firing straight at Ruddy.
  • 50'
Southampton have come flying out of the blocks and they win a corner when Ward-Prowse's shot is deflected behind.
  • 49'
Southampton have started the second half brightly here and Ruddy denies Osvaldo a first Premier League goal with a smart save after the Italian striker had spun Turner.
  • 47'
Injury concern for Norwich here as Johan Elmander goes down and clutches his ankle. The Swede manages to hobble to the touchline and fingers crossed, he will be okay.
  • 46'
The Fatboy Slim song is drowned out as Howard Webb blows his whistle to begin the second half. Right, let's hope for a goal. Right here, right now.
  • The teams emerge from the tunnels for the second half. No signs of any substitutions.
  • Half time scores in the Premier League: Cardiff 0-0 Everton, West Ham 0-0 Stoke and yep, you guessed it, Newcastle 0-0 Fulham. Where are all the goals?
  • As for Norwich, I think Chris Hughton will be demanding more from his wingers. Nathan Redmond was excellent in the first ten minutes and he should look to get in behind Calum Chambers down the left whilst I feel Robert Snodgrass could also have some joy against Danny Fox. Let's see if there will be any changes at the break.
  • I think Pochettino will demand his wing-backs to push forward more often in the second half. With Schneiderlin, Ward-Prowse and Wanyama all retreating deep, Southampton do not have enough bodies going forward. In saying that, they have looked very solid at the back.
  • Howard Webb blows his whistle to signal the end of the first half. 0-0 at half time.
  • 45'
Both teams have had spells in the ascendency here but neither has looked clinical or dangerous enough in the final third. I imagine both coaches will have a few words at half time.
  • 43'
Chance for Norwich when Elmander capitalises on a slip by Wanyama. The Swede slips the ball through for van Wolfswinkel but Lovren is there to make a crucial challenge. Two minutes until the break.
  • 41'
Victor Wanyama hasn't got his shooting boots on at the moment as he balloons a shot high over Ruddy's crossbar. Southampton starting to move through the gears now.
  • 40'
LALLANA HITS THE POST! Ward-Prowse's free kick is headed half clear by a Norwich defender and Lallana meets it with a cracking volley which thunders off the post. Ruddy was rooted to the spot.
  • 39'
Southampton are just beginning to get their foot on the ball and frustrate the Norwich midfield here. Some nice passing from Pochettino's side.
  • 37'
Incidentally, there have been no goals in any of the other 3pm kickoffs in the Premier League. Can we get the first one here? I'll admit, it does seem unlikely but Norwich are looking the more dangerous.
  • 35'
NORWICH GO CLOSE! Snodgrass plays the ball to Whittaker on the overlap and his fizzing ball across the goalmouth is deflected behind by Chambers for a corner. That could have gone anywhere!
  • 32'
Frenetic scramble in the Southampton box! The Norwich fans shout for a penalty when van Wolfswinkel's header hits Chambers' hands before Fer's follow up is blocked brilliantly by two Saints defenders.
  • 30'
Both sides lacking quality in the final third here. Calum Chambers comes forward from right-back but his cross is disappointing and goes behind for a goal kick. Where are the goals?
  • 28'
Osvaldo goes for a bicycle kick when the ball comes in from the right, but Turner gets in front of the Italian international striker to deny him an acrobatic first goal for Southampton.
  • 26'
The wolf has yet to be fed! Whittaker drives forward from right-back but his cross into the middle, aimed for van Wolfswinkel, is well caught by Boruc.
  • 24'
18-year-old James Ward-Prowse has assumed set-piece responsibility for Southampton this season but his whipped free kick into the box is well caught by Ruddy.
  • 22'
Southampton are finally starting to settle into the rhythm now. Lambert looks to slip a neat pass beyond the Norwich defence for Osvaldo but the summer signing from Roma is denied a chance for his first Southampton goal by the offside flag.
  • 20'
BRILLIANT FROM LALLANA! The Saints captain turns Garrido inside-out and his left-footed shot strikes Johnson, who did appear to have his arms raised. However, Howard Webb is not interested in the penalty appeals and waves play on. That looked like it should have been given.
  • 18'
Southampton muster their first shot on goal but it is not one of much note as Wanyama drags his shot well wide of Ruddy's goal.
  • 16'
FER GOES CLOSE! Snodgrass' inswinging cross is flicked on by van Wolfswinkel and Boruc needs to be alert to deny Fer with a smart reflex save. Norwich probing for the opener.
  • 14'
Southampton have hardly been out of their half so far and they survive when Garrido's dangerous cross just evades van Wolfswinkel in the middle.
  • 12'
Lovren is in pain after falling awkwardly in a challenge with Snodgrass. I'm sure the Croatian defender will be back on his feet in no time.
  • 11'
Bradley Johnson looks for his first goal of the season but the midfielder drags his left-footed shot wide of the target from the edge of the box.
  • 10'
It's all defence for Southampton in the opening ten minutes and Lallana tracks back brilliantly to steal Snodgrass of possession. I'm not sure Lambert has touched the ball yet.
  • 8'
Snodgrass drills in a cross which is headed clear excellently by Osvaldo. That was disappointing from the Scotsman.
  • 7'
Danny Fox concedes a foul just outside the area on Snodgrass. Good chance for Norwich here.
  • 5'
Southampton are yet to get going here. Saints fans will no doubt be looking forward to this Osvaldo-Lambert partnership. It really is a mouthwatering prospect.
  • 4'
NORWICH GO CLOSE! Redmond capitalises on a mistake from his England U21 colleague James Ward Prowse, cutting in from the left excellently before fizzing a shot just past the post.
  • 3'
Norwich have started on the front foot here. Nathan Redmond drifts inside from the left flank but his chipped pass, looking for the run of van Wolfswinkel is well headed clear by Dejan Lovren.
  • 2'
Ricky van Wolfswinkel vs Ricky Lambert. Which one will come out on top today?
  • 1'
Norwich get the game underway. Can they claim their first league win of the season?
  • Norwich engage in a yellow huddle in one half of the pitch and Southampton perform a red one of their own.
  • The stage is almost set as Norwich and Southampton take to the field. Captains Sebastien Bassong and Adam Lallana begin the handshakes.
  • Mauriccio Pochettino makes two changes to the side which snatched a late point against Sunderland. Pablo Daniel Osvaldo makes his first start, in place of Jay Rodriguez, whilst Danny Fox replaces Luke Shaw at left-back.
  • Chris Hughton makes three changes to the side which lost 1-0 to Hull City last week. Sebastien Bassong and Robert Snodgrass have returned to full fitness and they replace Russell Martin and Jonny Howson. Johan Elmander makes his league debut up front for Norwich, alongside Ricky van Wolfswinkel. Alexander Tettey drops to the bench.
  • Southampton subs: K. Davis (GK), Clyne, Yoshida, S. Davis, Rodriguez, Ramirez, Shaw.
  • SOUTHAMPTON (4-4-2): Boruc; Chambers, Fonte, Lovren, Fox; Wanyama, Schneiderlin, Ward-Prowse, Lallana (c); Osvaldo, Lambert.
  • Norwich subs: Bunn (GK), Martin, Tettey, Howson, Pilkington, Hoolahan, Becchio.
  • NORWICH (4-4-1-1): Ruddy; Whittaker, Bassong (c), Turner, Garrido; Snodgrass, Fer, Johnson, Redmond; Elmander; van Wolfswinkel.
  • Both managers have been active in the transfer window with some exciting additions. Let's take a look at the starting lineups...
  • Both these sides enjoyed goal fests in the Capital One Cup in midweek. Norwich defeated Bury 6-3 to advance to the third round whilst Southampton saw off the challenge of Barnsley 5-1. Let's hope for some more goals this afternoon.
  • Southampton themselves, have enjoyed a modest start, defeating West Brom 1-0 away with a last-minute spot kick from Rickie Lambert before drawing 1-1 at home to Sunderland. Can they continue their unbeaten start to the season? My name is Max Bentley and I'll be bringing you all the action from Carrow Road this afternoon.
  • There is an air of optimism around Carrow Road this season as Canaries' fans hope that their team can push for a top-half finish. However, a 2-2 draw on the opening day at home to Everton followed by a 1-0 defeat to 10-man newboys Hull City Tigers last weekend have meant that it has been a relatively disappointing start for Chris Hughton's side. Can they get their first league win of the season today against Southampton?
