Live Commentary

  • That's it from me folks, it's been a pleasure.
  • The French connection comes through for the Magpies once again. Gouffran and Sissoko struck either side of Brunt's lone effort for WBA to send Newcastle provisionally up to fifth after their fourth straight win.
  • 90' + 5'
    SubstitutionMoussa Sissoko Papiss Cissé
  • 90' + 5'
    That's it!
  • 90' + 4'
Cabaye wins a free kick, and Newcastle will use this opportunity to make some subs. The seconds being eaten up here, and that may just be that.
  • 90' + 2'
Jones escapes another penalty call as Sissoko goes forward on a break and tees up Cabaye at the top of the box. The Frenchman's strike hits the defender near the arm, but once again Phil Dowd opts against awarding an infraction.
  • 90'
    Four added minutes to go.
  • 89'
    Yellow Card Y. Mulumbu
  • 88'
    SubstitutionMorgan Amalfitano Zoltán Gera
  • 88'
Mulumbu booked for pulling back Sissoko, and will now be suspended for the next game after his fifth yellow card.
  • 86'
Into the last five minutes of this one, a time period where Newcastle haven't conceded a goal all season. Pardew and Co. set for their fourth win on the bounce.
  • 84'
Remy has been withdrawn for Anita. Pardew looking to close this one out, and puts in the versatile Dutch midfielder to help shore things up.
  • 83'
    SubstitutionLoïc Remy Vurnon Anita
  • 82'
Some urgency abut WBA now, but it's not helping their cause any, as their rush to get the ball forward simply results in some over ambitious punts that Newcastle can mop up easily.
  • 80'
Berahino is dispossessed by Sissoko, and the midfielder nearly wriggles his way into a clean run at goal, but a combination of three WBA players snuff out the chance.
  • 78'
Brunt and Sessegnon off, and Berahino and Anichebe on. Bold move by Steve Clarke, who has thrown all his cards on the table.
  • 77'
    SubstitutionStéphane Sessegnon Victor Anichebe
  • 76'
    SubstitutionChris Brunt Saido Berahino
  • 76'
A thumper from Cabaye is right down the throat of Myhill, who smothers with a little difficulty. Good strong effort.
  • 74'
Brunt has a decent shooting opportunity after a long pass from Olsson, but fails to find the target.
  • 72'
Handball appeal against West Brom as Santon's cross hits Ridgewell near the arm, but it would have been a very harsh call. The ref did well to let that slide.
  • 70'
That goal incidentally was Sissoko's first since February 2013, which came against Southampton.
  • 68'
Newcastle doing very well to take the sting out of West Brom's tail since Sissoko's goal, and are frustrating the opposition by keeping the ball efficiently.
  • 66'
Amazingly, Brunt's goal is the only shot on target that West Brom have had - all game. We're nearly into the last quarter of the game.
  • 63'
Ameobi does what he does best, holding off his man and chesting a deep pass effortlessly back to Remy. He strikes it from the top of the area, but misses the target.
  • 61'
Never mind his wonder goal, SIssoko has been inspirational for Nnwcastle in this game. His driving runs forward from the centre of the park and strength on the ball have set up and rescued many a Magpies attack.
  • 59'
After a tepid first half, we suddenly have a rip roaring game on our hands! Both sides are gunning for it!
  • 57'
    Assist Loïc Remy
  • 57'
    Goal Moussa Sissoko
STUNNER! if Brunt's goal was a thumper, then this was straight out of the cannon! Picking the ball up 25 yards from goal, the midfielder catches it perfectly, and snipes the ball into the top corner! What a goal!
  • 57'
  • 55'
After all that promise from Newcastle, the find themselves back at square one. And they have to keep their focus too, as West Brom look to press home their momentum from that goal.
  • 53'
    Assist Shane Long
  • 53'
    Goal Chris Brunt
Absolutely smashing finish from Brunt! The cross cones in from the right, and it may have taken the slightest of glances off the head of Long, or it may not have. Regardless, Brunt collects the ball on the left side, and eschews a cross in favor of a vicious finish that nearly bursts the net!
  • 53'
  • 52'
Remy really is a shoot on sight type of striker. He weasels into an inch of space on the edge of the box and does not hesitate, letting fly at goal, but it's deflected en route to Myhill.
  • 50'
Cabaye is too quick for Brunt who, on a yellow, clatters into him. The referee keeps his cards in his pocket though, and Brunt stays on the pitch.
  • 48'
REMY! It nearly fell for him! Morrison's poor giveaway allows the striker in behind, but after struggling to bring the ball under control, Myhill does just enough to snare the ball.
  • 46'
    Here we go again!
  • Newcastle leading West Brom 1-0 thanks to Gouffran's goal, his third in as many home games. The hosts have grown into the game as time has wore on, and look good value for their lead. Restart in just a bit, so stick around.
  • 45' + 4'
    Half time folks.
  • 45' + 3'
Brunt with a poor free kick from what was a good position, and that may just be that for the half.
  • 45' + 1'
FREE KICK? Cabaye with another incisive pass to Remy, and he turns Olsson well before squaring up to goal. the defender has a slight tug on his shirt though, and Remy goes down in a heap. We've seen shirt tugging called more often this season, but the referee is unmoved. Close shave for West Brom, as Remy probably could have stayed on his feet and had a go on goal.
  • 44'
We're hearing that there will be four minutes of time to be added at the end of the half.
  • 42'
Tiote needs some treatment, and slinks off to be attended to, as the game takes the briefest of pauses.
  • 40'
Ameobi is positioning himself to receive the ball, but Myhill is off his line swiftly to smother at the striker's boots. Confident keeping.
  • 38'
A fully warranted opener for the hosts, who have been the more inspiring side in this contest. Gouffran yet another goal, and Newcastle look comfortable.
  • 36'
    Goal Yoan Gouffran
What a soft, soft goal. Ameobi shadows Myhill on a corner, and the goalkeeper is caught flapping in no man's land as Gouffran prods home from close range!
  • 36'
  • 34'
Santon does exceptionally well to gallop forward and catch a seemingly hopeless ball on the left. He whips in a great ball to Remy to boot, but the defence, specifically McAuley, heads clear.
  • 32'
    Yellow Card Cheikh Tiote
  • 32'
Tiote is the next man in the book for persistent fouling, his latest infraction occurring against Morrison.
  • 30'
The game being broken into crumbs by a series of untidy fouls in midfield. The referee obliges each time, meaning that play is progressing in fits and starts.
  • 28'
    Yellow Card Chris Brunt
  • 28'
Brunt takes out Sissoko, and we have the first booking of the game.
  • 26'
Sessegnon looks primed to break through on the right during an increasingly rare West Brom attack, but Santon anticipates well and comes across to snuff out the threat.
  • 24'
Sissoko makes a powerful drive through that increasingly vulnerable central midfield area, and manages to slip in Remy. He shifts onto his right foot and has a go, but it's straight at Myhill.
  • 22'
Much better from Newcastle here, who are attacking engagingly through the centre of midfield. WBA struggling to keep up at the moment.
  • 20'
REMY! The Frenchman nearly strikes the hosts into the lead, as Sissoko muscles himself into room on the left, and he crosses for Remy at the near post, but Jones makes a crucial intervention to deflect it around the post!
  • 18'
Suddenly Newcastle break! Cabaye slips in Remy down the left, but the striker squares up for too long against his man, and loses the ball.
  • 16'
Hard to see where a breakthrough will come at this point. It's been very cagey and unambitious from both outfits.
  • 14'
Remy drives through the centre, eating up the miles afforded by the WBA midfield. He lets fly from 25 yards, but ultimately drags the effort wide.
  • 12'
A minute's standing ovation in the memory of Gary Speed is faithfully observed by all in attendance. The former Wales manager was a loyal servant of the Magpies for many a year.
  • 11'
West Brom are looking the more promising side in attack, with Debuchy's left flank in particular looking ripe for exploitation. Long has gotten through more than once.
  • 9'
Diego Lugano is spotted going through his paces on the sidelines, as McAuley is looking a little woozy from a heavy collision moments ago.
  • 7'
Apart from that Brunt attempt, it's been a real ho hum start to the game. Both sides are clearly still feeling each other out here.
  • 4'
Then Krul makes a hash of the resulting corner, as Sessegnon attacks from the keeper's spill, but Sissoko is on the line to prod clear.
  • 3'
A WICKED free kick from Brunt is struck with an insane, horseshoe like bend, but Krul is at full stretch to tip it wide!
  • 1'
    Here we go!
  • Out come the teams for the pre match formalities as kickoff is minutes away.
  • Newcastle have won three on the trot, with huge victories against Spurs and Chelsea among their scalps during the run. After a troubling start to the season, the Magpies can provisionally move into fifth place with a win today.
  • Steve Clarke sees fit to make only one more change than his Newcastle counterpart, as James Morrison and Billy jones step in, and Goran Popov and Stephen Reid bow out.
  • Just the one change from Alan Pardew, who swaps Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa out for Mathieu Debuchy at the back. Yanga-Mbiwa is joined on the pine by Hatem Ben Arfa and Papiss Cisse, who both will start another match from the sidelines.
