The Englishman's strike in the second half saw the hosts see off the visiting Wasps as they continued their recent strong run of form on home soilHougang United made it four home wins in a row after beating Brunei DPMM 2-1 at a wet Hougang Stadium on Wednesday evening.
Thomas Beattie’s winner after the break secured all three points for the Cheetahs after Brunei’s Shahrulrizal Rahman had cancelled out Azhar Sairudin’s effort in the first-half.
The Bruneians made their intentions known early in the game and nearly took the lead through Azwan Saleh in the fifth minute. The diminutive midfielder took on the Hougang defence by himself before unleashing a left-foot shot, which crashed against the post.
The heavens then opened up over Hougang Stadium and the wet pitch meant there were more late challenges than goal opportunities.
But the players soon adapted to the wet surface, with chances starting to come for both sides and it didn’t take long for the first goal to arrive.
A harmless looking corner in the 34th minute saw the ball fall to Cheetahs midfielder Azhar outside the box, who promptly unleashed a curler that dipped over the goalkeeper and into the corner.
But the home side’s lead lasted merely five minutes as another spectacular goal – this time from DPMM – set the game up nicely for the second half. Defender Shahrulrizal picked up a loose ball from a corner and volleyed it expertly into the top corner to equalise for his side.
Hougang looked determined to make it four successive wins at home after an extended half-time due to the weather conditions, and nearly regained the lead in the 57th minute when Mamadou Diallo crashed his header onto the crossbar from a corner.
But Johana Johari’s side got their reward five minutes later as Beattie got his head to a cross from the left and made it 2-1.
DPMM poured forward in search for an equaliser and came close on a few occasions, but Hougang held on for victory and continued their impressive run of form under interim coach Johana.
The hosts move up to seventh in the league and face Albirex Niigata next Friday, while DPMM will take on Courts Young Lions next Saturday.
