Young Tigers stun Wasps to halt losing run

The Malaysian club side notched their third home win of the season as they saw off their Bruneian opponents in an upset victory

Title hopefuls Brunei DPMM was given a rude shock by flamboyant Harimau Muda at Pasir Gudang Stadium on Wednesday afternoon as the latter halted a two-game losing streak and moved to sixth place in the S.League table.

Striker Faizat Ghazli and fan-favourite Maxsius Musa scored a goal each in the second half, rendering Brazilian defender Tales dos Santos' late strike a mere consolation for Vjeran Simunic's side in a 2-1 loss.

The visitors looked lethargic from the first whistle and committed uncharacteristic mistakes in their passes and crosses in the first quarter of the match, while their opponents started in first gear and dominated proceedings.

Despite playing with three players upfront, there was no real threat on goal from the Bruneian outfit as their players resorted to trying their luck from range with efforts that failed to trouble Harimau custodian Ilham Amirulah.

The hosts could have taken the lead towards the end of the first half if not for the heroics of Wardun Yusoff, who saved a point-blank header from Faizat in the six yards box.

But Faizal would duly get his reward two minutes after the restart as he got to the end of a through pass from the middle and slammed the ball into the bottom corner to give his side the lead.

It could have been two four minutes later as a dangerous ball looked bound for Syafwan Syahlan at the far post, but Dos Santos was present to thwart the danger.

DPMM would have themselves to blame for falling further behind 10 minutes from time as their backline failed to clear their lines and the ball fell to Maxsius at the edge of the box.

The 20-year-old did well to turn his markers inside out before unleashing a shot that sailed past Wardun and into the net.

Dos Santos then gave his team a lifeline five minutes later, rising highest in the box to knock in his side's only goal of the game.

But despite throwing numbers upfront in search of the equalizing goal, DPMM failed to find the back of the net and were condemned to their third defeat of the season.
